Outcome

Public upload and download commands await a typed OpenShell transfer adapter while preserving inherited terminal output, existing exit codes, and download publication behavior. The lifecycle lock and owned staging remain live until transfer, verification, and cleanup settle.

Reason

Issue #9810 migrates existing file-transfer consumers to the asynchronous OpenShell boundary. This first capability slice covers public user transfers. It must preserve behavior across the new suspension points before later consumers migrate.

Related issues

Refs #9810. Part of #9802. Session exports, onboarding token download, and plugin snapshot restore remain deferred; this PR does not close #9810. The separate leading-hyphen fix in #11388 remains outside this change.

Changes

  • Add the upload/download request and completion types and CLI adapter required by both public actions. Reuse existing process supervision and credential filtering, preserve inherited stdin/stdout/stderr, and distinguish process completion from verified publication. Adapter and real-process tests cover argv, output parity, failure classification, and interruption.
  • Await transfers and typed source probes inside the existing lifecycle lock. Retain interruption tracking through revalidation and lock release; publish only after successful verification. Lifecycle tests pause each asynchronous boundary and check locks, staging, destination preservation, and cleanup.
  • Preserve upload and missing-source exit codes after deferred lifecycle cleanup. Move existing compiled CLI coverage into the package-contract lane and extend failure coverage.
  • Document the adapter lifetime contract. Filesystem publication, transfer protocols, and later consumers retain their existing owners. No transfer deadline, retry, rollback, or output-filtering feature is added.

Verification

  • Focused source/process tests for upload, download, transfer lifecycle, transfer adapter, download verification, and coverage scheduling: 94 passed after repair and base integration.
  • npx vitest run --project integration test/runtime/sandbox/sandbox-transfer-process.test.ts: 2 passed, including byte-for-byte inherited output and interrupted child cleanup.
  • NEMOCLAW_EXEC_TIMEOUT=30000 NEMOCLAW_TEST_TIMEOUT=40000 npx vitest run --project package-contract test/package-contract/cli/sandbox-download-upload-cli.test.ts: 11 passed against rebuilt artifacts, including missing-OpenShell guidance and terminal liveness rejection for both commands. These local test budgets do not impose transfer deadlines.
  • NODE_OPTIONS=--max-old-space-size=5120 npm run typecheck:cli: passed.
  • Targeted Oxlint, npm run checks:repository, and git diff --check: passed.
  • NODE_OPTIONS=--max-old-space-size=5120 npm run validate:pr: passed against canonical base c5d9cb2b1873a5e2397cd67656c505304e848818. Commit hooks passed. Validation configuration and helpers match that base; installed validator packages were compared with integrity-checked locked artifacts.
  • Diff inspected for secrets, API keys, and credentials; none added.

Review notes

Sensitive paths: src/commands/sandbox/upload.ts and src/commands/sandbox/download.ts in NVIDIA/NemoClaw at commit 11218d6819a1f24da0370ff888acf5252d267867. Implementation self-review covered the complete slice, including these command exit paths, signal handling, and artifact publication. CodeRabbit review of the initial commit identified an interruption diagnostic repaired in upload and download. The repair also removes the obsolete integration timing hint for the moved test. Both CodeRabbit findings were resolved. All nine complete Advisor specialist writeups from run 34545289979 were reviewed; the accepted CLI evidence gap is covered by four added regression cases. Remaining recommendations were checked against the accepted output-parity scope and existing ownership. All nine fresh Advisor reports from run 34614929146 were reviewed; dispositions are recorded in PR comment 5636707976. CodeRabbit has no actionable findings for this head. Required CI passed on attempt 2 after an authorized targeted rerun of an unchanged onboarding test timeout.

npm run review:local was attempted before commit but failed while configuring its first specialist because its temporary OpenShell gateway refused connections. It produced no findings. This is unavailable review evidence, not an approval or waiver. Open as draft for automated review.

Accepted follow-ons assigned to @rsliter satisfy #9802's partial-delivery tracking requirement: #11497 owns all three session-export download paths and the onboarding token download; #11498 owns plugin snapshot restore copy and its transfer-dependent repairs. These consumers are explicitly outside this PR. #9810 remains open.

Accept the transfer and command executors as injected dependencies.

The action constructs host adapters directly here and at Line 158. SandboxDownloadOptions cannot override them, so the action tests must mock the adapter module paths instead of passing test doubles (see src/lib/actions/sandbox/transfer-lifecycle.test.ts Lines 19-24). Optional dependency fields keep the default behavior unchanged and make the lifecycle testable without module mocks.

As per path instructions for src/lib/{actions,domain,adapters,state}/**, which require review against src/lib/README.md: "Inject adapter dependencies so transfer lifecycle, process supervision, and cleanup remain testable without direct host-boundary calls."

The optional executor-parameter suggestion is deferred: typed module fakes already isolate the adapters while lifecycle tests exercise real locks and filesystem state; no caller needs runtime executor selection. The repair batch also removes the stale integration timing hint for the moved package test. Main was merged once after collecting the complete initial review to resolve inherited Hermes comparison drift, with no edits to Hermes behavior.

Advisor disposition for PR #11496

Candidate: 641425588ab27acc1fe1e4f4650f88d54a19dc03.
Advisor run: 34545289979. Read all nine complete specialist writeups from their artifacts. CI is successful; CodeRabbit resolved both prior findings.

  • Architecture, documentation, migration completion, and delivery-flow specialists report no issue. The delivery/verification references to onboarding live targets do not establish transfer coverage requirements: this slice changes a local subprocess boundary already covered by real-process tests, not onboarding recovery.
  • Customer-value missing-OpenShell guidance: verify through compiled CLI tests. The finding skips the preceding liveness path, which still calls getOpenshellBinary and emits the established installation diagnostic before reaching the transfer adapter. A binary disappearing after that check is a different invocation failure; replacing that diagnostic with new guidance would not preserve the previous output contract.
  • Operability bounded timeout/escalation: excluded by the accepted scope. Transfers deliberately retain unlimited duration and reuse existing process supervision. No change to termination policy, universal deadline, or new recovery guarantee was accepted. Do not introduce such a policy as a review repair.
  • Operability differentiated recovery diagnostics: existing nonzero and failure behavior is preserved and raw upstream diagnostics are inherited. New recovery text for each typed reason is outside the user's explicit output-parity constraint. Typed classification remains available inside the boundary. The specific interrupted-exit-zero defect was already repaired and approved by CodeRabbit.
  • Security leading-hyphen paths: inherited, explicitly tracked by nemoclaw download rejects a leading-hyphen sandbox source path as an unknown flag #11378 / still-open PR fix(cli): prevent leading hyphens in download paths from being parsed as flags #11388 and deferred in Phase 1 slice 8: Route file transfer through the OpenShell adapter #9810. Public host paths are resolved before transport; sandbox source validation remains unchanged. This review does not justify silently absorbing the separate path-policy change or claiming the inherited gap is fixed.
  • Reduction test helpers: proposed helpers import production TypeScript at module load (test/cli/helpers.ts imports sandbox-exec-output; launch-readiness-fixture imports ports, gateway-binding, and sandbox-recreate-transaction). Clearing NODE_OPTIONS on the spawned CLI does not remove those test-process imports. Keeping a minimal package-specific fixture preserves the compiled-package lane. No shared helper redesign is necessary here.
  • Verification terminal liveness exit: accepted in-scope evidence gap. Add compiled upload and download cases where liveness rejects an endpoint override; assert lifecycle exit 1, the established diagnostic, no internal deferred-exit error, and no transfer invocation. Pair with compiled missing-executable cases to validate the disputed parity finding.

Only package-contract tests change in this batch. All 11 compiled-package cases passed, including four new prerequisite/liveness cases. The liveness cases also passed after strengthening the assertion against leaking the internal deferred-exit error. Missing-OpenShell installation guidance is preserved; no production or output change is required. Fresh validation and automated review are required after publication.

Reviewed all nine complete Advisor specialist reports from run 34614929146 for commit 11218d6819a1f24da0370ff888acf5252d267867.

Seven specialists found no defect. The remaining two findings were checked against the code and accepted scope:

  • Security, option-shaped download sources: inherited and explicitly deferred to still-open fix(cli): prevent leading hyphens in download paths from being parsed as flags #11388. The canonical base c5d9cb2 download action passes ["sandbox", "download", opts.sandboxName, sandboxPath, stagedArtifact] without an option terminator at lines 194-195. This PR preserves that behavior under Phase 1 slice 8: Route file transfer through the OpenShell adapter #9810 slice 1's output/behavior parity decision. No claim is made that this separate gap is fixed.
  • Verification, deferred lifecycle exit: false positive. getReconciledSandboxGatewayState returns the endpoint-override state at gateway-state.ts:907-908. ensureLiveSandboxOrExit handles that state through its final diagnostic branch and calls the injected exit(1) at line 1220. Both transfer actions inject deferSandboxLifecycleExit. Therefore the existing compiled upload/download tests at package-contract/cli/sandbox-download-upload-cli.test.ts:115-139 do traverse the requested deferred exit and check exit 1, established guidance, absence of the internal deferred-exit message, and no transfer invocation. Removing wrapper recognition would expose that internal message and fail the existing assertion. Another stopped-sandbox fixture is not necessary to prove the same wrapper branch.

The generic onboarding E2E suggestions do not establish another transfer-specific external boundary. Existing process, lifecycle, and compiled CLI evidence covers this slice. CodeRabbit reported no actionable findings for this head; both earlier threads are resolved. Its optional docstring coverage warning is advisory, with the adapter lifetime contract documented in its owning README.

All required CI checks pass. The one unchanged onboarding test timeout passed on the authorized targeted shard rerun (CI run 34606412787, attempt 2); no code or timeout changes were made. All 105 focused transfer tests and publication validation passed. No unresolved candidate-owned repair remains.
