…igured span prefix
`SpanExporter` writes the event type attribute under
`f"{self._span_prefix}.event_type"`, where the prefix is taken from the
`NAT_SPAN_PREFIX` environment variable and defaults to `nat`.
`convert_span_to_otel()` looked that attribute up under the hardcoded key
`"nat.event_type"`, so every deployment that customised `NAT_SPAN_PREFIX` fell
back to `OpenInferenceSpanKindValues.UNKNOWN` for all spans and lost the
semantic span kind (LLM, TOOL, AGENT, ...) that OpenInference consumers such as
Phoenix rely on.
Read the key from `SpanAttributes.NAT_EVENT_TYPE` so the converter and the
exporter agree on the prefix, and cover the custom-prefix path with tests.
The default-prefix test reloads the span and converter modules with
`NAT_SPAN_PREFIX` pinned to `nat` so it does not depend on the prefix the test
process happens to start with.

Description
convert_span_to_otel()resolves the OpenInference span kind from the NAT event type, but it read that attribute under the hardcoded key"nat.event_type".The producer side does not hardcode it.
SpanExporterwrites the attribute asf"{self._span_prefix}.event_type"(span_exporter.py:181), whereself._span_prefixisos.getenv("NAT_SPAN_PREFIX", "nat").strip() or "nat"(span_exporter.py:94). The same rule is exposed to users asSpanAttributes.NAT_EVENT_TYPEinnat.data_models.span.So with the default prefix everything works, but any deployment that sets
NAT_SPAN_PREFIX(for example to namespace spans from several services in one collector) looks up a key that was never written,SPAN_EVENT_TYPE_TO_SPAN_KIND_MAP.get()misses, and every span is exported withopeninference.span.kind = "UNKNOWN". Downstream OpenInference consumers (Phoenix, Arize, ...) then lose the LLM / TOOL / AGENT / RETRIEVER classification and render the whole trace as untyped. This converter is on the path of both
OtelSpanExporterand the Phoenix ATIF exporter (convert_spans_to_otel_batch).Fix
Read the key from
SpanAttributes.NAT_EVENT_TYPEso the converter and the exporter derive the prefix from the same source:SpanAttributesfromopeninference.semconv.traceis already imported in this module, so the NAT one is imported asNatSpanAttributesto avoid the clash.Verification
New tests in
packages/nvidia_nat_opentelemetry/tests/observability/test_span_converter.py:test_converted_span_kind_with_default_prefix- the defaultnatprefix still resolvesLLM_STARTtoLLM.test_converted_span_kind_uses_configured_span_prefix- parametrized overnat, custom, prod.service; reloads the span modules withNAT_SPAN_PREFIXset, then asserts the span kind isLLM.test_converted_span_kind_without_event_type_is_unknown- a span with no event type still reportsUNKNOWN.Before the fix, the

The same hardcoded
"nat.event_type"lookup exists inpackages/nvidia_nat_data_flywheel/src/nat/plugins/data_flywheel/observability/processor/dfw_record_processor.py:80. I left it alone to keep this PR to a single package, but it has the same root cause and can be fixed the same way if you want it in scope.Disclosure: this change was prepared with AI assistance and reviewed, tested, and verified by me.
