Motivation

Routing calls buffer upstream streams before an algorithm can inspect their responses. Currently, call_one() attaches observation after buffering, so the observer follows consumption of the replay rather than the upstream I/O. The client span can remain open after the upstream response has finished, delaying the native Relay plugin's close-time export and making attribution depend on the later replay context. Buffering failures can also skip usage already received.

Description

Attach observe_client_call() before routing-stream buffering and return the replay without another observer. Retain error recording for dispatch and buffering failures.

The production change is 13 added / 5 removed lines in run.rs. Routing keeps its existing buffering behavior.

Add one 63-line regression in the existing observability test suite, reusing its routing algorithm, streaming client, and telemetry helpers. It checks that:

  • The client span is exported with the correct workflow parent and token usage before replay begins.
  • Consuming replay preserves the answer content.
  • Consuming or dropping replay exports no additional observations.

The complete PR changes two files: 76 additions / 5 deletions. This is a standalone lifecycle correction; per-attempt and decision accounting remain separate work.

Validation

  • The retained regression fails without the production fix and passes with it.
  • Observability integration suite: 22 passed.
  • Repository pre-commit checks: Rust formatting and workspace Clippy with warnings denied passed.
  • Separate native Relay 0.10.0 smoke testing verified workflow parentage, usage and pricing, final-answer replay with full consumption and early abandonment, and incremental consumer delivery. Gated tests also exercised slow/concurrent consumers, cancellation, and midstream errors. These were local integration checks, not a new committed test harness or a performance benchmark.

Validation used macOS arm64 and a loopback provider. The branch starts at main c365efe832822541024704aadf6a0d5c81cc0528; results describe this branch rather than a separate test of newer main commits. No Relay core or exporter accounting behavior changes.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

call_one now observes client responses before buffering routing streams and reports mapped errors. Added tests cover replay, buffering failures, cancellation, and packaged Relay routing scenarios.

Changes

Routing observability

Layer / File(s) Summary
Client-call observation and buffering
crates/libsy-llm-client/src/run.rs
call_one maps client-call and buffering errors, observes successful responses before routing-stream buffering, and reports errors after setting served-model metadata on successes.
Buffered routing observability tests
crates/libsy-llm-client/tests/observability.rs
Tests check span export and usage for drained or dropped replay. Failure and cancellation cases check retained token counts, outcomes, and a single exported client span.
Packaged Relay routing scenarios
crates/switchyard-nemo-relay-plugin/scripts/test_buffered_routing.py
The integration test exercises buffered, streamed, concurrent, drained-replay, and abandoned-replay calls. It checks workflow events, usage, costs, provider counts, and cleanup.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Merge Risk: Low · up to 85eab

Routing calls are now observed before buffering, so spans and usage are exported before replay. A buffering failure may add duplicate error attributes to a span, and for stream errors the first attribute carries the upstream message. The behavior is a bounded observability issue and mergeable with follow-up.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 85eab

The change corrects observation timing without adding a dispatch target or changing buffered response events. No introduced security issue was established in the reviewed paths, but incomplete broader coverage leaves limited residual uncertainty.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected scope is observation on the shared client-call path. Routing calls still buffer upstream streams, while completion calls return live observed streams. The inspected delta adds neither a downstream request nor a new dispatch destination.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing native Relay metadata boundary remains allowlisted. Field updates replace stored values, raw error text is excluded from the allowlist, and captured client spans are emitted on closure rather than on every field update.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Each observed stream owns its terminal state. Failure or EOF removes its observer; dropping an open observer records cancellation. Message completion permits trailing usage until EOF. Buffered replay does not inherit that ownership, preventing replay consumption from extending or repeating the upstream observation.

Assert the exported attributes for interrupted routing calls.

The test checks only the latest tracing fields and the exported span count. It cannot detect duplicate exported attributes or incorrect exported values. Check the values and key counts on the exported span.

Record buffered stream failures only once.

The observer and call_one both record the same failure. Exported spans can therefore contain duplicate error attributes. For StreamError, the first error attribute contains the upstream message, despite the outer handler’s redaction.

Record one sanitized error for buffered failures. Preserve dispatch-error and cancellation recording, and test the exported attributes.
