fix(translation): preserve Responses history during rebuilds - #1229
When Switchyard rebuilds a Responses request, it can move inline instructions, drop assistant phase and item IDs, reorder tool outputs, and collapse text blocks. This PR preserves that history through reconstruction, including after the original request body is discarded.
This PR is rebased onto main at abd759dbe3, which includes merged #1213 and its cache check using upstream_model. #1213 edits supported saved request bodies directly when adding handoff notes. This PR preserves native history when a request must be rebuilt.
The tuning guide now treats handoff notes as an optional control. It replaces the outdated warning about a future cache fix with guidance to tune notes from calibration failures, keep them fixed while comparing other settings, and validate them on held-out tasks. The stage-router guide explains when notes can be appended to saved bodies and when cache markers are added. It covers upstream model recognition, OpenAI explicit-only mode, and existing marker limits.
As an illustrative example, a history containing user, developer, then assistant messages should retain that order after a rebuild. The old decoder moved the developer message into top-level instructions.
Responses reconstruction now preserves these parts of the caller's history:
Inline system and developer messages retain their roles and positions, separately from top-level instructions.
Assistant phase remains missing, null, or set to its supplied value.
Item id remains separate from the call_id that pairs a tool call with its output.
Function calls, custom tool calls, tool outputs, and compaction items retain their order and native fields.
Text retains its string or array representation, block boundaries, whitespace, and block metadata. Missing and null content fields remain distinct.
A saved request body alone cannot cover edits that require reconstruction. Each native item therefore remains an ordered message. Fields outside the decoded content stay attached to that message or its text blocks, including through serialization. Deleting, inserting, or reordering content keeps metadata with its owner. Reconstruction uses the current content for edited fields. Edited reasoning does not reuse the old encrypted content or item ID.
Routing and conversion to Chat Completions or Anthropic Messages use a temporary grouped view so reasoning and parallel tool calls still count as one assistant turn. Grouping lives in switchyard-translation; compaction edits still use indexes into the original messages. Compaction detection skips inline instructions so they cannot hide a marker or count as a summary. Conversions that cannot express assistant phase, item IDs, or inline instruction placement report the loss; LossyConversionPolicy::Reject rejects those conversions.
Responses clients now default to responses_compatibility = "native". Previously, all Responses clients received flattened function namespaces, and reconstruction also paired tool outputs and added output names. Backends that require flat function names must now select "flat_tools". Backends that also require each output immediately after its call and a name on each output must select "kimi". Kimi pairing stops at intervening messages, preserves existing output names, and leaves outputs without local calls in place. These adaptations run after translation and body overrides. Switchyard rejects unknown modes and use with Chat Completions or Anthropic clients when building the configuration, even for unused clients.
This illustrative client entry shows where to select the mode in an existing deployment. Use your backend's URL and authentication settings:
[llm_clients.responses]
format = "openai_responses"base_url = "https://provider.example/v1"responses_compatibility = "native"# The backend may require "flat_tools" or "kimi".
Rust struct literals for Message and ContentBlock::Text now require a responses field. Callers creating plain text can use Message::text and ContentBlock::text, or set responses: None.
Metadata adds bytes to decoded messages, their clones, and their serialized form. It shares the message's existing lifetime, including retained history. Grouped views temporarily clone native messages. This PR adds no process-wide store or memory bound.
One pre-existing limitation remains: an initial Responses request with input: [], no previous_response_id or conversation, and all raw preservation cleared has no native message metadata identifying its source. Retained-history registration cannot recognize that request as native Responses.
Review also corrected two rendering issues. When grouped user messages contained tool results, turn_view labeled the results as [user] and could select them as the first user task. It now labels tool results as [tool] while preserving the role of adjacent user text. This label bug predates this PR. Contiguous assistant blocks stay together so command text can still be matched to structured tool calls.
When top-level Responses instructions was "", conversion to Chat Completions added an empty system message. The Chat encoder now skips instructions whose rendered text is empty. Responses reconstruction still distinguishes empty from missing instructions. Nonempty instructions, including whitespace, and inline system/developer messages retain their content.
These rendering fixes add no retained state or dependencies. Existing character and window limits remain; mixed content can occupy more rendered turns within those limits.
Validation
Eight forced-rebuild regressions failed on the #1213 branch at ba32f4c44c. Fourteen reconstruction tests passed with this change, covering history preservation, edits, and serialization after saved bodies were cleared. Two additional compaction regressions failed before the review correction and passed afterward. Six HTTP captures checked retained and rebuilt history in each of the native, flat_tools, and kimi modes. The captures used a local provider stub and do not establish real-provider cache reuse or performance.
Four local HTTP cache tests passed across eight cases for Chat Completions and Responses. They covered alias/upstream-model disagreement in both directions, with saved and rebuilt bodies; the old model argument failed four tests. Five additional temporary review tests passed across nine cases for tool labels and instruction handling. The failing cases reproduced before the fixes.
The temporary tests were removed after validation. Their source, tested diffs, and results are archived outside the repository. Existing tests remain, with updated names and expectations. After rebasing onto main and removing the temporary tests, the Rust workspace suite passed 1,192 tests with one ignored. The freshly rebuilt Python extension passed 71 targeted tests, including streaming translation. Clippy and formatting passed. The strict documentation build also passed after the wording edits.
The change adds Responses metadata retention and reconstruction, a translated conversation view, request-edit helpers, configurable Responses compatibility modes, and prompt-caching updates. Routing and turn-processing code consumes the conversation view in selected paths. Incomplete Responses events now emit usage data.

Summary
Responses metadata decoding and reconstruction crates/protocol/src/llm.rs, crates/switchyard-translation/src/codecs/responses/*, crates/switchyard-translation/tests/request_translation.rs, crates/protocol/README.md
Responses decoding retains native item fields and content shape. Encoding reconstructs eligible items from retained metadata and current IR values. Tests cover native item order and preservation.
Conversation view and request editing crates/switchyard-translation/src/conversation.rs, crates/switchyard-translation/src/request_edit.rs, crates/switchyard-translation/src/codecs/{anthropic,openai_chat}/*, crates/switchyard-translation/src/codecs/common.rs
The translation crate adds a grouped conversation view and helpers for appending notes and prepending system prompts. Anthropic and OpenAI Chat encoding uses the view and checks for Responses metadata loss.
Routing and turn processing crates/libsy/src/algorithms/*, crates/libsy/src/algorithms/util/*, crates/libsy/src/algorithms/vgr/*, crates/libsy-llm-client/src/run.rs
Selected routing and turn-processing paths use translated conversation messages. Turn detection and compaction changes account for system and developer messages. Handoff-note expectations use separate messages.
Responses compatibility and prompt caching crates/libsy-llm-client/src/client.rs, crates/libsy-llm-client/src/responses_compatibility.rs, crates/switchyard-runner/src/config.rs, docs/reference/toml_schema.md
The client adds Native, FlatTools, and Kimi Responses compatibility modes and applies the selected policy to Responses bodies. Configuration validates the setting. Prompt caching considers temporary notes and supports OpenAI guidance-cache breakpoints for recognized model names.
Incomplete Responses events now emit terminal usage before the existing length stop. Tests check the usage values and locate the length event separately.
Responses tool outputs may be shown to the trajectory judge as user messages, which can distort its judgment. Codex-style requests with empty instructions now gain an empty leading system message when sent to Chat backends. Aliased targets may get incorrect prompt-cache breakpoints. Fix the tool-result labeling before merging; the other two are small follow-ups.
