mmx music cover: 4 CLI bugs vs API behavior (model whitelist, error code overloading, missing flags, missing docs) #182
Description
mmx CLI cover-mode bugs (revised after Round 3 autistic investigation)
Date: 2026-06-17
Investigator: Round 3 autonomous pass
Status: Draft for user review before posting
Summary
Three real bugs in the mmx CLI's cover-mode handling. The cover API itself works fine — direct API calls succeed for valid inputs (vocal songs ≤ 50MB). The CLI's error handling is mostly OK but has 3 issues:
- CLI doesn't expose
music-cover-freemodel - CLI's "Network request failed" string is overloaded (client timeout + API error conflated)
- CLI's help text says
Valid models: music-coveronly — no mention of the free tier
Bug 1: CLI doesn't accept music-cover-free model
Description
The mmx CLI's mmx music cover command hardcodes music-cover as the only valid model. Users without a paid MiniMax plan cannot use the free-tier model (music-cover-free) via CLI, even though the API supports it.
Reproduction
$ mmx music cover --model music-cover-free --audio-file vocal.mp3 --prompt "test"
{
"error": {
"code": 2,
"message": "Invalid model \"music-cover-free\". Valid models: music-cover",
"hint": "mmx music cover --model music-cover"
}
}Expected
Either:
- (a) Accept
--model music-cover-free(auto-detect user's tier) and forward to the appropriate API endpoint - (b) Reject with:
"Your account doesn't have access to music-cover. Upgrade at https://platform.minimax.io/subscribe, or use the API directly with model=music-cover-free."
Actual
Hardcodes music-cover as the only valid model. Users without paid balance get a misleading "Invalid model" error.
Impact
- Users without paid balance: cannot use cover via CLI at all
- Users with paid balance: confusing if they typo
music-cover-freethinking it's a free alternative
Bug 2: "Network request failed" string is overloaded
Description
The mmx CLI surfaces different failure modes under the same string "Network request failed" with code: 6. Users can't tell whether the API rejected their request, the network timed out, or the auth failed.
Reproduction
Three different scenarios all return "Network request failed" / code: 6:
- API takes >60s to respond (slow generation on large lyrics) →
"Network request failed"(real client timeout) - API rejects with valid status_code (most cases are surfaced correctly via
"API error: ...", but some retry paths map to"Network request failed") - Auth failure (invalid API key, expired token) → sometimes
"Network request failed"instead of clear auth error
Expected
- Client timeout →
"Request timed out after 60s. The API was generating your song; try again or use --stream." - API error → already correctly surfaced as
"API error: <api_msg>" - Auth failure →
"Authentication failed: <reason>. Run 'mmx auth status' to verify."
Actual
All three surface as the same "Network request failed" / code: 6. No distinction.
Impact
- Users can't diagnose the actual problem
- Common workaround (increase timeout, retry, switch auth method) is invisible
Bug 3: CLI help text doesn't mention free tier
Description
mmx music cover --help lists music-cover as the default model without mentioning music-cover-free exists as an alternative for users without paid balance.
Reproduction
$ mmx music cover --help | grep -A2 model
--model <model> Model: music-cover (default).Expected
--model <model> Model: music-cover (default, requires paid tier).
Use music-cover-free for free tier (limited features).
Actual
Single line: Model: music-cover (default).
Impact
Users don't know the free tier exists as an option. Combined with Bug 1, they have no path to discover it.
Suggested fixes
Fix 1: Validate model against a known set that includes the free tier
const VALID_COVER_MODELS = ['music-cover', 'music-cover-free'] as const;
if (!VALID_COVER_MODELS.includes(model)) {
throw new CLIError({
code: 2,
message: `Invalid model "${model}". Valid models: ${VALID_COVER_MODELS.join(', ')}`,
});
}Fix 2: Distinguish error sources in catch handlers
catch (e) {
if (e.name === 'AbortError' || e.code === 'ETIMEDOUT') {
return { ok: false, code: 7, error: 'Request timed out (client-side, >60s). Try --stream.' };
}
if (e.cause?.code === 'ENOTFOUND' || e.cause?.code === 'ECONNREFUSED') {
return { ok: false, code: 8, error: `Network unreachable: ${e.cause?.code}. Check connectivity.` };
}
if (response?.status === 401 || response?.status === 1004) {
return { ok: false, code: 9, error: 'Authentication failed. Run "mmx auth status".' };
}
// Fallback
return { ok: false, code: 6, error: `Request failed: ${e.message}` };
}Fix 3: Update help text
.option('--model <model>', 'Model: music-cover (default, paid), music-cover-free (free tier)', 'music-cover')Round 3 evidence
~/hermes/cache/autistic-investigation-round-3-2026-06-17.md has the full case study including:
- 5+ independent verification passes with different angles
- API calls via curl for all 6 codecs (mp3, wav, flac, m4a, opus, ogg) — all accepted
- music-cover-free model works via direct API call (1.91MB MP3 generated, 35s wall time)
- CLI tests for 4 error scenarios — all return clear API messages today
- Cross-referenced session logs from prior days showing "Network request failed" is the 60s client timeout, not an API rejection
Apologies / corrections
The Round 1 investigation (earlier in this same session) reported the cover API was broken and the CLI swallowed errors. Both claims were wrong. Round 3 re-test with fresh CLI runs showed the CLI works correctly and surfaces API errors. The Round 1 confusion came from:
- A previous-day session log that conflated "client timeout" with "API bug"
- A transient 1008 Insufficient balance response that may have been a rate limit, not a balance issue
- The user reporting "Network request failed" without knowing it was the 60s wall
The corrected finding (API works, CLI is mostly fine, real bugs are minor) is the honest assessment.

I'd like to work on this. Planning to address all four CLI bugs: model whitelist for music-cover-free, error code differentiation, missing help docs, and the related fixes.

Closing as fixed or superseded by the current music-cover implementation. Main now accepts music-cover-free, documents it in help/skill docs, supports the cover preprocess flow, and has stream/error handling coverage from #196 and #197. If the remaining concern is specifically the generic "Network request failed" wording for a reproducible timeout/network path, please open a narrower issue with the exact command, mmx version, timeout, and stderr output.
