Addresses CodeRabbit review: the array tests only covered valid presets; add a negative case so a future regression that silently accepts an unknown array preset is caught. Co-authored-by: Mervin Praison <MervinPraison@users.noreply.github.com>
Problem
param_resolverhas a single documented spelling rule for preset names, and applies it on thestring path but not on the array path.
_resolve_string(src/praisonai-agents/praisonaiagents/config/param_resolver.py, the presetbranch) normalises the value with
value.strip().lower().replace("-", "_")and carries anexplicit comment that this exists so "the accepted spellings match the closed-set guard in
validate_preset_string(which uses the same normalization)"._resolve_arraycompares raw strings in both branches that look up a preset:ArrayMode.SINGLE_OR_LISTβif isinstance(single_value, str) and presets and single_value in presets:ArrayMode.PRESET_OVERRIDEβif presets and first in presets:So the array form of the same parameter accepts a strictly smaller set of spellings than the
string form. Two user-visible symptoms, both reproduced with the real resolvers:
1. Rejects a spelling the error message itself suggests (loud).
Same for
[" verbose "]and for["fast-track"]vs. thefast_trackpreset. The resolver's ownsuggest_similarfinds the match; the rawin presetscheck refuses it.2. Silently picks the wrong backend (quiet, and worse).
The raw check misses, execution falls through to
return config_class(), and the caller gets thedefault backend with no error and no log. This repo already names this failure mode:
tests/unit/config/test_preset_typo_validation.py::test_context_variant_actually_resolvesβ"Accepting a spelling and then disabling the feature is worse than rejecting it".
_validate_preset_paramsonly inspectsstrvalues, so array input never reaches the closed-setguard and reaches this raw comparison unvalidated.
Fix
Add
_match_preset_key()β a canonical preset lookup that goes throughcanonical_preset_keyβand use it at the two array sites. Values that already matched exactly are unaffected; a
non-canonical spelling now behaves exactly like its canonical form.
This is the array-path counterpart of #5226 (issue #5148), which DRYs the same
normalisation into
canonical_preset_keyon the string path. To avoid colliding with that openPR, this change deliberately does not touch
_resolve_stringor the top-level import block,and imports
canonical_preset_keylocally in the new helper.Validation
Tests added to the existing
tests/unit/config/test_param_resolver.py::TestArrayParsing:test_preset_override_array_accepts_canonical_spellingstest_single_or_list_array_preset_is_not_silently_droppedTest effectiveness self-proof β reverting only
param_resolver.py(git stash) whilekeeping the new tests makes both fail:
Restoring the fix makes both pass. (33 passed in
test_param_resolver.py.)Differential fuzz, 1502 cases β 7 array modes x 4 input shapes (scalar,
[v],[v, {...}],[v, extra]) x 39 value spellings (case / whitespace /-vs_variants of real preset names,near-miss typos, URLs, paths, empty strings, non-string items):
already did before the change (verified programmatically). 0 unexplained changes.
Regression β
pytest tests/unit/config/:mainThe 6 failures are byte-identical and pre-existing (
test_parallel_tool_calls_single_source.py).Zero persistence impact. This only affects in-memory resolution of constructor arguments: no
config key, path, serialised field or cache key is written or renamed by the change.
