A customer wants to keep using Supabase log drains (for their SOC2 retention) and asked whether Maple configures anything on their side. It did not: the integration only polled the logs API, and log_drain_enabled was never set. This adds drain support and makes existing drains visible.

What changed

  • Detection. Hourly discovery lists every project's log drains (GET /v2/projects/{ref}/analytics/log-drains, covered by the analytics_config:read scope we already request). Each drain is stored as a secret-free summary: name, backend type, destination host / bucket / region, whether it sends to this deployment's ingest, and whether Maple manages it. API keys, auth headers and paths are never stored. A refused listing (Free plan, paused project) keeps the last snapshot and does not fail discovery.
  • Opt-in drain per project. A new "Drain" switch on the Supabase card mints a logs-only maple_src_ token source and creates an OTLP drain (http/protobuf, gzip) to the ingest gateway that sends as it. Turning it off deletes the drain and its source; disconnect does the same for every managed drain and never touches the customer's own. A Free plan answers 402 and surfaces as IntegrationsPlanRequiredError.
  • No double ingest. A drain replaces polling for its project: enabling it turns polling off, polling refuses while a drain is on, and a drain to Maple set up by hand in Supabase blocks the managed one.
  • Robustness. Creates are never retried. Maple's drains carry an org + deployment specific description, so a drain Maple lost track of (timed-out create, failed delete) is swept on the next enable, and another org's or deployment's drain is never touched. Teardown and discovery writes are conditional on the recorded drain id, so concurrent toggles cannot clobber each other. Discovery flags a managed drain deleted upstream or whose source was deleted, and never recreates it.
  • Migration 20261021234123_supabase_log_drains: 4 columns on supabase_projects, an index and a SET NULL FK to sources.

Verification

  • Typecheck: packages/domain, packages/db, packages/backend, apps/api, apps/web all clean.
  • packages/backend src/services/integrations/: 47 files, 731 tests pass, including 14 new drain tests (create body and token, 402 rollback, failed-create sweep, orphan replacement, foreign install untouched, hand-made drain blocks, listing keeps no secrets, refused listing keeps the snapshot, disable and disconnect cleanup, discovery flags) and a polling/drain exclusivity test in SupabaseLogsService.test.ts.
  • apps/web Supabase scene tests: 7 files, 56 tests pass (drain list, blocked switch, broken drain, pending write, plan refusal toast).
  • packages/db parity test passes against the generated migration.
  • Request and response shapes were checked against the published v2 spec (api.supabase.com/api/v2-json). Not yet verified against a live Pro project (the drain API answered 403 right after a Pro upgrade on 10-21); that and screenshots come from the preview.

Follow-ups

  • A leftover Maple drain next to a healthy managed one is only swept on the next enable; a discovery sweep would race an in-flight enable.
  • Two admins enabling the same project at once, with one create failing, can delete the other's new drain (the UI then flags it as missing). A per-project lease would close it.
  • logDrainsCheckedAt is sent but not shown, so a listing that keeps failing looks current.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added Supabase log-drain management with enable/disable controls and status details.
    • Added visibility into configured destinations, delivery errors, pending actions, and last-checked times.
    • Added a dedicated Drain column and clarified Pro-plan and per-drain billing requirements.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Prevented conflicting log polling and log-drain configurations.
    • Improved handling for plan restrictions, failed operations, missing drains, and existing manual drains.
    • Improved cleanup when disconnecting Supabase projects.

…ing drains

Discovery lists each project's log drains and keeps a secret-free summary
(name, backend, destination host, whether it sends to Maple). A per-project
switch creates an OTLP drain to the ingest gateway as a logs-only token
source; it replaces polling for that project, and a drain to Maple set up
by hand in Supabase blocks it so logs are never stored twice.

Migration not generated yet.

A newly configured manual drain can be missed when polling is enabled, causing duplicate log delivery. The trigger is narrow, but a fresh drain check would reduce the risk before merging.

Maple review

🟢 Confidence 7/10 · likely safe to merge
Two real gaps in the drain toggle — hand-made drains do not block polling, and a disable racing an enable is lost — and neither path has a test.
2 warnings −2 · tests partial −1 · risk medium · 2/2 new units observable

Adds opt-in Supabase OTLP log drains next to hourly drain discovery, with the card switch, request/response schemas and 4 columns. Two toggle paths are wrong: polling can start beside a hand-made Maple drain, and a disable racing an enable is lost.

  • enableDrain mints a logs-only token source and an OTLP drain to the ingest gateway
  • inspectDrains lists every project's drains hourly and flags a broken managed one
  • SupabaseProjectUpdateError gains plan-required and validation failures; request gains logDrainEnabled
  • The card gets a Drain switch and a drain list per project

The enable's final write is guarded only by logDrainId.isNull(), which a concurrent disable also satisfies: it reads the row before the drain exists, so teardownDrain (SupabaseConnectionService.ts:1025) deletes nothing, clears the row with the same null guard, and reports the drain off — then this write matches and sets logDrainEnabled: true with the new drain. The customer sees a successful disable while Supabase keeps pushing their logs. Require the row still be disabled here so the disable wins and stored.length === 0 triggers undo.

🟠 Major · Retire managed drains when a reconnect switches… · SupabaseConnectionService.ts:920-929

packages/backend/src/services/integrations/SupabaseConnectionService.ts:920-929
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Retire managed drains when a reconnect switches organizations.

When organizationChanged is true, finalizeConnect stamps removedAt on the old organization's projects. It does not call retireDrains. Later, reconcileProjects builds gone only from rows with removedAt === null. Discovery therefore never reaches these rows. updateProject also refuses removed projects with IntegrationsNotFoundError, so the user cannot turn the drains off in Maple.

Consequence:

  • The old project's Maple drain stays active in Supabase.
  • Its maple_src_ token source stays valid.
  • Logs from a Supabase organization that is no longer connected keep arriving and count against the org's ingest.
  • The new grant covers only the new organization, so Maple cannot delete those drains upstream later.
  • The token sources are removed only when the org disconnects (the project delete in disconnect returns logDrainSourceId).

This code is outside the diff. The new drain lifecycle is what makes it relevant.

Fix:

  • Before the transaction, load the old organization's live projects that have a logDrainId or a logDrainSourceId. The old grant is still stored at that point.
  • Delete their drains upstream on a best-effort basis.
  • After the switch, delete their token sources, or clear the drain columns in the same UPDATE and delete those sources inside the transaction.
  • At minimum, delete the token sources in the transaction. Ingest then rejects the leftover drains.
🛠️ Minimal fix: revoke the old drain sources in the same transaction

The route now runs updateProject before setLogsEnabled (apps/api/src/routes/internal/integrations.http.ts:515-522), so a PATCH carrying both metricsEnabled and logsEnabled applies the metrics switch (SupabaseConnectionService.ts:1050) and is only then refused here because the project has a hand-made Maple drain. The caller gets a 400 while metricsEnabled already changed, contradicting the "no write before the precondition" rule at SupabaseConnectionService.ts:1038. Move the manual-drain check into updateProject, next to the managed-drain precondition, so it is refused before any write.

In `updateProject`, add `project.logDrainsJson.find((drain) => drain.toMaple && !drain.managedByMaple)` to the precondition block that refuses `request.logsEnabled === true`.

Manual-drain refusal in `setLogsEnabled` fires after the PATCH already wrote metrics
The route now runs `updateProject` before `setLogsEnabled` (`apps/api/src/routes/internal/integrations.http.ts:515-522`), so a PATCH carrying both `metricsEnabled` and `logsEnabled` applies the metrics switch (`SupabaseConnectionService.ts:1050`) and is only then refused here because the project has a hand-made Maple drain. Move the manual-drain check into `updateProject`, next to the managed-drain precondition, so it is refused before any write.
Suggested fix: In `updateProject`, add `project.logDrainsJson.find((drain) => drain.toMaple && !drain.managedByMaple)` to the precondition block that refuses `request.logsEnabled === true`.

  • ✅ F2 · A disable that lands during an enable is overwritten and the drain stays on

Re CodeRabbit's outside-diff finding (finalizeConnect on an organization switch): valid, fixed in de2ab5b. The new grant cannot reach the old organization's drains, so inside the switch transaction the old projects' drain columns are cleared and their maple_src_ token sources deleted (read before the update, as noted); ingest then refuses whatever those drains still send. Test: "reconnecting to another organization revokes the old projects' drain sources".

Re the Maple review at 2574b2a / de2ab5b:

  • F4 (taxId in a span attribute, billing details view): not part of this change. Commit de2ab5b accidentally swept a repo-wide formatting pass (1,238 files) into the PR; 68949a2 restores every one of those files, so the PR is back to its 22 Supabase files and the billing view is untouched. The tax id label is pre-existing code on main; worth its own look separately.
  • F3 (manual-drain refusal after metrics were written): valid, fixed in cd277a5. updateProject now refuses logsEnabled: true next to a hand-made Maple drain in the same precondition block as the managed-drain check, before any write. Test: "polling next to a hand-made Maple drain is refused before the metrics switch is written".

Maple review

🔴 Confidence 4/10 · risky as written
Held at 4 because a critical finding is open.
1 critical −3 · 1 warning −1 · tests covered · risk medium · 3/3 new units observable

Adds Supabase log-drain discovery to the hourly reconciliation and an opt-in managed OTLP drain per project that replaces polling, with secret-free drain summaries on the card. The guards (pending mark, conditional writes, orphan sweep) hold; the only open issue is a partial metrics write when the logs switch is refused from a stale snapshot.

  • inspectDrains lists each project's drains hourly and stores secret-free summaries
  • enableDrain mints a logs-only maple_src_ source and an OTLP drain, turning polling off
  • A hand-made Maple drain blocks both the managed drain and polling
  • integrations.http.ts applies the project PATCH before the logs switch

Require a fresh drain listing before enabling polling.

The admin supabaseUpdateProject route calls setLogsEnabled when payload.logsEnabled is present. setLogsEnabled checks only the persisted logDrainsJson snapshot. Discovery retains that snapshot when listing fails, so a manual Maple drain created after the last successful listing can be missed. The route can then persist logsEnabled=true, and pollOrg will poll the project while the manual drain delivers the same logs to Maple.

Before writing logsEnabled, perform a successful live listDrains check and reject manual Maple drains. If the listing fails, leave polling disabled instead of relying on the retained snapshot.

Assert that unrelated token sources survive the organization switch.

The test currently creates only the managed token source and asserts that the total token-source count changes from 1 to 0. A cleanup implementation that deletes every token source would pass.

Add a customer-owned token source before the switch. After the switch, assert that the count is 1 and that the customer-owned source still exists. The test must verify that finalizeConnect deletes only the IDs in drainSourceIds.

Re CodeRabbit's review of cd277a5:

  • Fresh drain listing before polling (outside diff): taken in 87d1387 with one change. Turning polling on now lists the project's drains live in updateProject (before any write) and refuses if a hand-made Maple drain shows up. If the listing fails it falls back to the stored snapshot instead of refusing: Free plan and paused projects can refuse the drain listing, and polling is exactly what those projects use, so refusing would lock them out. Test: "turning polling on sees a drain to Maple set up since the last discovery" (covers both the live hit and the refused-listing fallback).
  • Org-switch test nitpick: taken. The test now adds a customer-owned token source first and asserts it is the only token source left after the switch.

Adds Supabase log drains: hourly drain discovery, an opt-in OTLP drain per project fed by a logs-only token source, and polling/drain exclusivity. Scoping and race handling are sound; one stale-snapshot guard can refuse polling after the blocking drain is gone.

  • inspectDrains stores a secret-free drain summary per project each discovery
  • enableDrain mints a logs-only maple_src_ source and an OTLP drain, turning polling off
  • updateProject lists drains live before polling or a managed drain is enabled
  • disconnect retires Maple drains before revoking the grant

Delete a hand-made drain to Maple in Supabase and turn polling on before the next hourly discovery writes the snapshot: the live check passes, then this one refuses with "already sends its logs to Maple through the drain …", so the PATCH fails for up to an hour and any metricsEnabled in the same request has already been written.

Check the same live listing here (as `updateProject` does, falling back to the snapshot only when the listing is refused), or pass the drains `updateProject` already checked into `setLogsEnabled` instead of re-reading the snapshot.

Adds opt-in Supabase log drains plus hourly drain detection, and this head makes a live drain listing refresh the stored snapshot so the polling switch checks the same list. Safe to merge.

  • updateProject writes the live drain listing back as logDrainsJson before the gates that read it
  • A refused listing falls back to the stored snapshot via Effect.option, so Free-plan projects still toggle
  • enableDrain mints a logs-only source, creates the OTLP drain, and turns polling off in the same write
  • inspectDrains flags a managed drain deleted upstream or whose source is gone, and never recreates it

  • Snapshot write is guarded on the recorded logDrainId (SupabaseConnectionService.ts:1084), so a concurrent enable or disable is not clobbered

  • deleteLogDrain tolerates a 404 (supabase/api.ts:380) and drain sources are kind = "token" (SourcesService.ts:355), so teardown matches

3 warnings −3 · tests partial −1 · risk medium · 3/3 new units observable

Adds opt-in Supabase log drains (create/teardown of an OTLP drain plus its token source), hourly drain discovery, and drain-vs-polling exclusivity. The shape is sound but two failure paths leak state: a rolled-back enable can strand a live ingest token, and the polling switch can set logsEnabled on a removed row.

  • enableDrain mints a logs-only maple_src_ source and creates an OTLP drain, turning polling off in the same write
  • inspectDrains lists every project's drains hourly and flags a managed drain that stopped delivering
  • setLogsEnabled now reads the project first and refuses polling beside a drain
  • New 402 IntegrationsPlanRequiredError and a logDrains snapshot on SupabaseProjectStatus

Findings

🟠 Warning · F6 · undo skips the token-source delete when the upstream drain delete fails

correctness · packages/backend/src/services/integrations/SupabaseConnectionService.ts:508-511

deleteUpstreamDrain and deleteDrainSource are sequenced with Effect.andThen under one bestEffort, so whenever the Supabase delete fails (revoked grant, 5xx, 429, timeout) the source delete never runs. The path is stored.length === 0 at line 540 and the Effect.onError at line 539: the minted maple_src_ source stays in sources with a live token, and no sweep reaches it — retireDrains and teardownDrain only follow the ids recorded on the row, which this failed enable never wrote.

Run the two rollback steps independently, each wrapped in its own `bestEffort`: `Effect.andThen(deleteUpstreamDrain(...).pipe(bestEffort("drain delete rollback", orgId, ref)), deleteDrainSource(orgId, sourceId).pipe(bestEffort("drain source rollback", orgId, ref)))`.
🟠 Warning · F7 · setLogsEnabled write dropped the removedAt IS NULL guard

correctness · packages/backend/src/services/integrations/SupabaseLogsService.ts:221-223

The update now matches on $.id alone, where the old statement also required $.removedAt.isNull(). A disconnect tombstones the connection's project rows between the read at line 177 and this write, so the PATCH still succeeds and sets logsEnabled (plus a watermark and lease) on a removed row; when discovery brings that project back, reconcileProjects clears removedAt and it resumes polling although nobody switched polling on.

🟠 Warning · F8 · The POST-count assertion cannot catch a retried create

tests · packages/backend/src/services/integrations/SupabaseConnectionService.test.ts:571

This asserts one POST after a 402, but isTransient requires kind === "upstream" and status ≥ 500 (supabase/api.ts:84), so a 402 is never retried even with { retry: false } removed — the assertion passes either way and the "creates are never retried" guarantee stays unverified. Move the count to the 502-after-store case (drainCreateFailsAfterStore, test at line 592) and keep this one for the plan error.

Assert `drainCalls(fake, "POST").length === 1` in the 502-after-store test, where a retry would actually happen and leave two drains.

`undo` skips the token-source delete when the upstream drain delete fails
`deleteUpstreamDrain` and `deleteDrainSource` are sequenced with `Effect.andThen` under one `bestEffort`, so whenever the Supabase delete fails (revoked grant, 5xx, 429, timeout) the source delete never runs. The path is `stored.length === 0` at line 540 and the `Effect.onError` at line 539: the minted `maple_src_` source stays in `sources` with a live token, and no sweep reaches it — `retireDrains` and `teardownDrain` only follow the ids recorded on the row, which this failed enable never wrote.
Suggested fix: Run the two rollback steps independently, each wrapped in its own `bestEffort`: `Effect.andThen(deleteUpstreamDrain(...).pipe(bestEffort("drain delete rollback", orgId, ref)), deleteDrainSource(orgId, sourceId).pipe(bestEffort("drain source rollback", orgId, ref)))`.

F7 · Warning · correctness · packages/backend/src/services/integrations/SupabaseLogsService.ts:221-223
`setLogsEnabled` write dropped the `removedAt IS NULL` guard
The update now matches on `$.id` alone, where the old statement also required `$.removedAt.isNull()`. A `disconnect` tombstones the connection's project rows between the read at line 177 and this write, so the PATCH still succeeds and sets `logsEnabled` (plus a watermark and lease) on a removed row; when discovery brings that project back, `reconcileProjects` clears `removedAt` and it resumes polling although nobody switched polling on.
Replace those lines with:
							.where(($) => [
								$.id.eq(project.id),
								$.removedAt.isNull(),
								...(enabled ? [$.logsEnabled.eq(false), $.logDrainEnabled.eq(false)] : []),
							]),

F8 · Warning · tests · packages/backend/src/services/integrations/SupabaseConnectionService.test.ts:571
The POST-count assertion cannot catch a retried create
This asserts one POST after a 402, but `isTransient` requires `kind === "upstream"` and status ≥ 500 (`supabase/api.ts:84`), so a 402 is never retried even with `{ retry: false }` removed — the assertion passes either way and the "creates are never retried" guarantee stays unverified. Move the count to the 502-after-store case (`drainCreateFailsAfterStore`, test at line 592) and keep this one for the plan error.
Suggested fix: Assert `drainCalls(fake, "POST").length === 1` in the 502-after-store test, where a retry would actually happen and leave two drains.

Maple review

🟢 Confidence 10/10 · safe to merge
The delta is three small fixes, each read against the code it changes and pinned by a drain test; no new defect found.
no findings · tests covered · risk medium · 3/3 new units observable

The follow-up commit fixes all three open findings: the drain rollback now always deletes its token source, the polling write is back under the removedAt IS NULL guard, and the no-retry guarantee is pinned by the 5xx create test. Safe to merge.

  • undo runs the upstream drain delete and the source delete as independent best-effort steps
  • setLogsEnabled write matches on id plus removedAt IS NULL again
  • The 502-after-store create test now pins one POST, where a retry would send three

Before merge

Fixed since the last review

  • ✅ F6 · undo skips the token-source delete when the upstream drain delete fails
  • ✅ F7 · setLogsEnabled write dropped the removedAt IS NULL guard
  • ✅ F8 · The POST-count assertion cannot catch a retried create

  • bestEffort swallows every non-interrupt cause, so a failed upstream delete no longer stops deleteDrainSource (SupabaseConnectionService.ts:289, :509)

Preview test (0ac35ed on app-pr-1657)

Run by a separate verification agent against the live preview and a real Supabase account.

Tested

  • Connect over OAuth + Sync now: pass (Supabase org "Maple", Free, 1 project; metrics on by default).
  • Free plan, Drain switch on: bug found. Supabase answers the drain listing with 403 "Your organization does not have access to this API" before a create could answer 402, so the toast read "The integration provider could not complete the request" instead of the plan message. No drain, no orphan token source, switch stayed off, Logs switch unaffected (correct). Fixed in 64b54b5: a 403 listing now means "no drains on this plan": enabling shows "Log drains need a Supabase Pro plan or higher.", hourly discovery skips the project without an error span, and the polling check falls back to the stored snapshot. New test pins the live behavior.
  • Reload persists switch state: pass.

Not reachable on this preview: the Pro path (drain created at Supabase, logs arriving through it, drain deleted on off). The signed-in Supabase account only belongs to the Free org; the Pro test project lives in another org. Still open before merge.

Noted, not from this change: the card's "synced in 18s" reads as a future time right after connect (clock read before the server timestamp); the web command span SetSupabaseProjectLogDrain (like the metrics/logs ones) records Ok when the request failed.

Maple review

🟢 Confidence 10/10 · safe to merge
Drain work is scoped to Supabase rows and the ingest-token paths are tested; the residual risk is concurrent enable/disable ordering, which the compare-and-set writes cover.
no findings · tests covered · risk medium

Adds Supabase log drains: hourly secret-free discovery of a project's existing drains and an opt-in Maple-managed OTLP drain, with polling turned off so a project's logs arrive once. The DB, upstream API and service paths are pinned by new tests; safe to merge.

Preview re-check of the Free-plan fix (64b54b5)

Toggled the Drain switch on the Free project (lmmoinyuqerdvwkklktg) on app-pr-1657, twice:

  • The card showed "Log drains need a Supabase Pro plan or higher." and the switch stayed off; Logs switch unchanged.
  • Traces (deployment.environment.name = pr-1657): PATCH /_api/* → 402; SupabaseConnectionService.updateProject → enableDrain → SupabaseApi.listLogDrains with maple.supabase.log_drains_available = false, all status Ok (a refused listing is no longer an error span). Whole request ~110-180 ms server-side, one Supabase call, no create attempted, no token source minted.

The Pro path (real drain created, logs through it, drain deleted) is still untested on the preview: it needs a Supabase session that belongs to the Pro test org.
