perf(traces): match span-name filters without reading the attribute map per row - #1332

…ap per row A span-name filter matches the stored name or the HTTP display name. The display name was computed from SpanAttributes on every row of the org and window, so the filter could not use the sorting key. - equality and exclusion: only an HTTP span has a display name of its own, so the stored names that can display as a value are derived when the query is compiled; the map is read for those names only. - contains: the names are resolved from service_operations_hourly, and the map is read for HTTP-named spans only when a rewritten name in the window contains the term.
A local store can keep raw spans longer than service_operations_hourly keeps names. A window that starts before the rollup's horizon falls back to comparing both names on the row. The two-tier guard skips literals and follows nested parentheses when it tells a lookup from a tier.

Span searches use separate paths for trace IDs, single-value contains searches, and other searches. When available, hourly operation-name data supports non-HTTP matching. Catalog queries and tests cover these paths and their rollup boundary. ChangesHTTP span-name search

It also narrows contains searches through the hourly operation rollup. The rollup records every span, so search results should be the same. No merge-blocking issues remain. The generated catalog has 378

ROW_SOURCE_REaccepts any amount of whitespace and opening parentheses. A longer valid prefix would be classified incorrectly. Use a single-pass stateful scan if this optimization is needed. TheSTRING_LITERAL_REconcern is separate.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

…ptional lookup A contains search matched stored name OR display name in one predicate, so the attribute map was read for every row the scan touched: over a high-volume week that ran out of memory. span_search now scans HTTP-named spans (the only rows whose map is read) and all other spans separately. - The stored-name half resolves names from service_operations_hourly only when the warehouse has the table, the rollup has a row older than the window, and at most 10,000 names match; otherwise it compares SpanName on the row. - The lookup is distinct, capped, narrowed to an exact service filter, and its end bound no longer wraps past 2106. No now() in the statement. - Equality filters put the stored-name candidates in front as their own condition, and stop enumerating them for values with many spaces. - contains filters outside span_search keep the per-row predicate. - The two-tier catalog guard exempts only the distinct-names lookup.

ORmake it expensive:(OrgId, ServiceName, SpanName, toDateTime(Timestamp))nothing to prune on.ORas one filter step, soSpanAttributesis read for every row the scan touches, also when a pureSpanNamecondition sits on the other side of theOR. Only a conjunction is split: it filters onSpanNamefirst and reads the map where a row survives. Measured in review on 3.5 days at September volume: the HTTP branch as a conjunction 362 ms, the same rows through anOR1 874 ms.On Maple's own org that is 4 to 6 s per 15 M spans at two threads,
span_searchruns the predicate twice (timestamp cutoff, then the page), and at September volume (62 to 111 M stored spans a day) a week does not finish. The second scan inspan_searchhas to stay: it is what keeps the maps of non-returned rows from being read.Solution
1. Equality,
INand exclusion, in every traces query (tracesBaseWhereConditions,packages/query-engine/src/ch/queries/query-helpers.ts). Only an HTTP-named span has a display name of its own, and it is always<method> <route>. The stored names that can display as a value are derived when the query is compiled and go in front as their own condition:A value with more than 16 derived names (many spaces) uses "is HTTP-named" as the candidate condition instead of the list, so the statement stays small: a 300-word value compiles to under 6x its own length.
2. Contains, in
span_search(the pipe behind MCPsearch_traces, the chat agent and the CLI;spanSearchByNameQueryintraces.ts). The search is two scans of disjoint rows,UNION ALL, each with the existing cutoff-then-page stages:The second scan can resolve its names from
service_operations_hourly(distinct display names per hour, capped at 10 001 rows, narrowed to an exact service filter), which lets the sorting key prune to them. This is a new read dependency ofspan_searchon that rollup, and it is conditional:service_operations_hourly(self-hosted cluster without the migration, or metadata unreadable)SpanNamescan of the window, no mapHTTP-named spans never depend on the rollup. The table check comes from
WarehouseCapabilities(the deployed schema for managed warehouses, system.columnsfor self-hosted), so an absent table is never queried. The other two checks are scalar subqueries that are constants by the time the read is planned. One state is not detected: rollup rows missing inside the window while an older row still exists (a materialized-view swap gap, or retention cleanup that removes rows out of order). Then a non-HTTP name that occurs only in the missing stretch is not found.3. Contains in the other traces queries (breakdown, timeseries, trace list) keeps the per-row predicate, unchanged SQL. Those need the same two-scan restructure per query; the production evidence above is
span_search.Also in this PR:
now(), no schema, datasource or materialized view change.DateTime64, so an end past 2106 no longer wraps to an empty set.rollup-spliceexempts exactly one shape, a subquery selecting onlyDISTINCT service_operations_hourly.SpanName, which has no measure to add to a raw tier. Ten crafted tier shapes (parenthesised and nested unions, scalar sums, comma joins,WITH,arrayJoin, greatest, a plain rollupIN) are tests and stay flagged.docs/warehouse-rollups.mddescribes the exemption.span_searchcontains with and without the rollup capability, with a service filter and offset, andlist_tracescontains, all in the SQL baseline and the ClickHouse analyzer sweep. Before
