Why

Maple.layer (the long-running preset) only had what Effect's stock Otlp.layerJson offers, so dropSpanNames and anticipatedErrorIdentifiers existed only on MapleFlush.make and the Cloudflare make. Users on Maple.layer had no way to:

  • stop expected typed failures (a duplicate document, say) from becoming error groups;
  • filter out a noisy idle polling loop that was driving span volume.

What changed

One tracer for every preset.

  • Maple.layer (server and client) now composes Effect's OtlpLogger and OtlpMetrics with the Maple tracer, which pushes into Effect's own OtlpExporter.
  • Batching, export intervals, retry back-off, the shutdown flush, the shared Flusher, appendUrl URL joining and OtlpResource.fromConfig all match the stock layer.

Shared MapleSpanOptions (shared/span-options.ts), accepted by all three presets. It replaces three copies of the option parsing.

Option Behaviour
dropSpanNames Unchanged: drops only the matching span
dropSpanSubtrees New. The span starts unsampled, so all of its descendants are dropped too
dropSpan New. Predicate on the finished span (name, kind, attributes, exit)
anticipatedErrorIdentifiers Now also on Maple.layer
isAnticipatedError New. Predicate form, for driver errors that are only expected in one case
excludeLogSpans Now also on Maple.layer

Classification fix. A server span that answered 5xx stays Error even when its failure is listed as anticipated. Before, an anticipated error that was not mapped to a 4xx was exported as Ok while the client got a 500.

Release. @maple-dev/effect-sdk goes to 0.10.0. README, landing docs (sdks/effect.md, sdks/effect-cloudflare.md) and a changelog entry are included.

Reviewer notes

Subtree drop is opt-in.

  • dropSpanNames keeps its old meaning. The subtree behaviour has three side effects:
    • unsampled traceparent on outgoing calls, so downstream services that honour it drop their spans too;
    • errors inside the subtree are not tracked;
    • logs inside it keep trace ids for spans that are never exported.
  • These are documented next to the option. apps/ai's McpServer/Notifications. drop behaves exactly as before.

Behaviour changes for Maple.layer users. These come from now sharing the flushable classification:

  • spans whose failure carries ErrorReporter.ignore (unmatched-route 404s) are dropped;
  • server spans that rendered a 5xx are relabelled Error. That can open new error groups for crashes that used to export as Ok.

Fingerprints. Maple.layer passes includeCauseInStack: true, matching the stock OtlpTracer, so exception stacktraces and the fingerprints hashed from them don't move. The flushable presets keep their current stacks.

Workaround in docs. The docs also show a no-option alternative: withSpan(name, { level: "Debug" }) with Tracer.MinimumTraceLevel set to Info. A test pins it.

Tests.

  • New Maple.layer tests capture the real export payloads (via a file-level fetch stub, since FetchHttpClient resolves globalThis.fetch once). They cover:
    • shutdown export, auth header and resource;
    • subtree drop, and log correlation for the surviving span;
    • anticipated → Ok, unexpected → Error;
    • the trace-level recipe.
  • New tracer tests cover:
    • span-only vs. subtree drop (grandchildren and forked fibers);
    • errors inside a dropped subtree;
    • the dropSpan predicate and isAnticipatedError;
    • 5xx precedence and includeCauseInStack.
  • A client test confirms span options apply and session.id is still stamped.

Publishing. The npm publish is manual, after merge.

Test plan

  • vitest run in packages/effect-sdk: 152 passed
  • tsc --noEmit for effect-sdk, infra and alchemy-maple (after building the SDK dist)
  • oxlint -c .oxlintrc.effect.json and oxfmt --check clean

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Span filtering and anticipated-error classification options are now available across SDK presets, including Maple.layer.
    • Drop spans by name, subtree, or custom predicate; excluded subtrees remain unsampled and do not contribute errors to error tracking.
    • Configure whether cause details appear in stack traces and whether log spans are excluded.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Server responses with 5xx status continue to be recorded as errors, even when their failures are classified as anticipated.
  • Documentation
    • Updated SDK configuration guidance and upgrade information for version 0.10.0.

…redicates

Maple.layer was built on Effect's stock Otlp.layerJson, whose tracer has no
hook to drop or reclassify spans, so dropSpanNames and
anticipatedErrorIdentifiers only existed on the flushable presets. It now
composes OtlpLogger + OtlpMetrics with the Maple tracer pushing into Effect's
OtlpExporter (same batching, intervals, shutdown flush, shared Flusher).

All presets share one MapleSpanOptions:
- dropSpanNames: unchanged, drops only the matching span
- dropSpanSubtrees: new, starts the span unsampled so its subtree goes too
- dropSpan: new, predicate on the finished span (name, kind, attributes, exit)
- anticipatedErrorIdentifiers / isAnticipatedError (new predicate form)
- excludeLogSpans now on Maple.layer as well

A server span that answered 5xx now stays Error even when its failure is
anticipated. Maple.layer keeps includeCauseInStack so existing error
fingerprints don't move. Bumps the SDK to 0.10.0.

Maple review

🟢 Confidence 4/5 · likely safe to merge
Contained SDK change with real export-payload tests; the one thing I could not read is Effect's Layer.mergeAll flusher wiring in shared/otlp-layer.ts.
quality 100/100 · no findings · tests covered · risk medium

Maple.layer now exports traces through the Maple tracer (with MapleSpanOptions: subtree drops, dropSpan, error predicates) instead of Effect's stock OtlpTracer, and the three presets share one option parser and span encoder. The layer behaviour changes are documented and covered by new export-payload tests; nothing I read is a defect.

  • Maple.layer (server+client) exports via makeOtlpLayer + the Maple tracer
  • New dropSpanSubtrees starts a matching span unsampled; dropSpan/isAnticipatedError added
  • A server span that rendered 5xx stays Error even when its failure is anticipated
  • Span options parsed once in shared/span-options.ts for all three presets
What was checked
  • dropSpan predicate gets the ended span's live attribute Map and exit; drop runs before the ignored-failure check (flushable-tracer.ts:72-85)
  • 5xx precedence reorder keeps interrupt and Success branches in their old order; only Failure+5xx+anticipated changes (flushable-tracer.ts:251-291)
  • Flushable presets pass the whole config to makeSpanBuffer, whose filter reproduces the previous drop/ignore/anticipated behaviour

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c63d1

The SDK is mergeable with a bounded documentation correction: Cloudflare users should not be told that automatic interval flushing is supported.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to c63d1

The inspected export path preserves browser consent checks, destinations, and credential handling. Subtree suppression is explicitly configured and documented. The main concern is that exceptions from the new user-defined predicates can escape span completion and lose telemetry before retry protection applies.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · observed: The new public dropSpan and isAnticipatedError callbacks run synchronously during span completion without an exception boundary. If a callback throws, the span is already Ended but has not entered the buffer or exporter queue, so transport retry cannot recover that telemetry. This broadens a pre-existing internal callback pattern to application-defined policies across presets. Effects on the host Effect program remain unresolved; this is a failure-containment concern, not a verified remote attack path.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The material exposure is telemetry visibility within SDK runtimes using the shared policy, extending to descendant spans and downstream tracing that honors sampling propagation. The inspected configuration does not establish a new tenant-access or privileged-credential boundary; policy installation remains an application configuration decision.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new browser export composition remains behind the existing request-execution consent wrapper. That wrapper blocks requests without consent, suppresses cumulative metrics under explicit consent, prunes traces and logs against the current grant, and fails closed on unsupported or malformed payloads. Endpoint resolution and bearer-header construction are unchanged from the canonical PR base.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Anticipated-error classification rejects causes containing defects and requires every typed failure to match. This limits accidental suppression of mixed failures. However, the application-provided predicate itself has no exception isolation before completed telemetry enters recoverable export storage.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider defining a conservative callback-failure contract: isolate predicate exceptions, retain the affected span as non-anticipated rather than silently losing it, and report bounded diagnostics outside the same tracing callback. This would protect telemetry and host-runtime failure containment without changing intentional drop behavior.

Limit autoFlushInterval to MapleFlush.make.

Cloudflare Config does not declare autoFlushInterval, and Cloudflare make does not schedule interval flushes. It only flushes through flush(env) and the request-scope finalizer. Update the documentation to avoid promising automatic flushing for Cloudflare.
