I'm on Chrome 71.0.3578.98 on Windows 7. I didn't receive a request to allow notifications but I manually granted access by clicking on the lock icon -> Notification: Allow.
I'm also getting the same error on the demo site here: https://just-comments.com/demo.html
I'm on a corporate-controlled internet access over a proxy. I always have issues with applications not being able to get through, but this is the first time I've had an issue on the web.

OK, it seems to be working now. This might be related to the corporate policy on the Chrome browser.
It looks like notifications are blocked by default.
By clicking on the lock icon -> Notification. it says "Block (default)"
On chrome://settings/content?search=notifications , it says "blocked"
But going here: chrome://settings/content/notifications?search=notifications then the blocked toggle is disabled and the various other sites I've blocked and allowed are on this page.

Like I said, I manually allowed notifications on jeelabs but it didn't work. Then I manually allowed them on just-comments and they worked there (a popup window happens briefly on the first one but disappears before anything happens). Then I went back to jeelabs and that same popup happened briefly and I guess that means it works.

Now I removed jeelabs and just-comments from chrome://settings/content/notifications and I'm trying again. I have to manually allow just-comments and it works on the demo site. I don't want to bombard jcw with notifications so I'm afraid to try there.

Sorry I'm rambling. Do you think allowing just-comments is the important part of making jeelabs work? It didn't seem to work before that. Do you have another site I can test on?

Correction on the toggle. Bad UI. Toggling left is "Blocked", toggling right is "Ask before sending (recommended)". I don't think I've ever seen a label change when the toggle changes.

I will try to update the error page with more instructions in case if someone else has the push notifications blocked by default.

I changed my Chrome setting to Ask before sending (recommended).
On 60devs, the bell icon is automatically selected and push notifications work no problem. I didn't even have to allow on this page and 60devs isn't on my allow or block list.
Removing just-comments from my notifications page and reloading 60 devs... bell icon is still blue but not receiving notifications.
I manually allow just-comments notifications and... still not working.
I even manually allowed comments on 60devs and they're not working there. I de-selected/selected the bell. Nothing. I've been reloading the page between each test.
I broke it but not sure how to bring it back.

I removed 60devs and justcomments from allow list and went to the demo site again. Bell was un-selected and I selected it and the popup happened and seems to be working now.
Sorry for leaving so many comments but there appears to be some bug in the relationship between various sites and changing Chrome settings. This might not affect many users but there's no warning or error that things have gone wrong.

No problem, I will delete the comments now. Thanks for the insights! Actually, the push notifications are set up via just-comments.com domain so there should be no need to allow them for specific sites. Probably, Chrome remembered the first time when it didn't work... I also have sometimes problems with settings in Chrome (e.g. with blocking 3rd party cookies), sometimes to apply a setting a restart of Chrome is required.

I will continue monitoring and I will try to do more testing with blocked push notifications.

Yeah, go ahead and delete.
I'm having lots of strange errors while manually switching all these settings. Sometimes I can't even leave a comment. A more formal test process instead of random clicking will probably get you to the bottom of this.
Thanks for being so responsive to this issue. My main site is made in Jekyll and I was hesitant to move my blog there because I couldn't have comments. Glad you made it work! I'll consider this project if I ever switch.
