feat(server): the database is copied before a risky J5 ledger migration runs - #429
Conversation
…on runs Before the SQL layer opens, the server checks through a read-only handle whether a J5 ledger migration at or above 030 is pending. If one is, it copies statev2.sqlite to statev2.pre-j5-<id>.sqlite beside it, and refuses to start if the copy fails. Migration 030 arrives in a later PR; the tests use a stand-in pending migration. With 030 applied and 031 pending, the copy was written under the 030 name and replaced the real pre-030 restore point. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
An ordinary later migration no longer copies the whole database. The guarded list is explicit and holds 030 today. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Two processes starting during the same upgrade shared one temp name, so one could publish the other's unfinished copy. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Two servers with the same process id in separate PID namespaces, sharing one data directory, computed the same partial path. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

makeSqlitePersistenceLiverunssnapshotBeforeJ5LedgerMigration(dbPath)before the migration setup. The current layer tests do not detect removal or reordering of this call. The manifest does not contain guarded migration30, so a real pending-migration fixture cannot exercise this path. Mock the snapshot helper and both migration runners, then assert the event order. This tests wiring only; it does not claim to test real snapshot creation.Suggested fix

Problem
The plan to fold Squadrons into projects (#412) re-keys the whole J5 ledger in one migration (030, a later PR). Today nothing copies the database before a J5 migration runs unless the person used the update script, so a bad migration on another install has no way back.
What changed
Before the SQL layer opens, the server checks whether a guarded J5 ledger migration is pending. If one is, it copies the database first. The guarded list is explicit (
J5_LEDGER_SNAPSHOT_MIGRATIONS,[30]today): a later migration joins it only if it rewrites data destructively, so an ordinary 031 does not cost a full copy.node:sqlitehandle readsMAX(migration_id)fromj5_a2a_migrations. Pending means a guarded id above that which this build knows, which is the migrator's own rule.node:sqlitebackup()writesstatev2.pre-j5-030.sqlitebeside the database. The name carries the lowest guarded migration that is actually pending, so a guarded 031 writesstatev2.pre-j5-031.sqliteand leaves the 030 file alone. It goes to a.<pid>.<uuid>.partialfile first and is renamed when complete, so two attempts starting together each publish only their own copy. A partial file left by a crash is not swept; the runbook tells a person to delete it.LedgerMigrationSnapshotErrorwith the cause in its message. The server does not start and nothing migrates.docs/j5/runbooks/dogfood-runtime.mdhas the restore steps: stop the server, move the snapshot back, run the previous version. Nothing deletes snapshots; the runbook says a person does. This PR adds the mechanism only. Migration 030 is not in it, so the production path takes no snapshot yet.
Entry points. The J5 ledger migrations run only inside
makeSqlitePersistenceLive's setup layer, and the snapshot call sits at the top of that function, so each of these passes through it:server.ts),cli/project.tsandauth/EnvironmentAuth.ts, throughlayerConfig;j5/fleet-load.tsandj5/a2a/test-support/devDeliverySeed.ts, which callmakeSqlitePersistenceLivedirectly. They are developer tools run against dev data and do not need the snapshot. They get it only because the call's position covers them at no extra cost.apps/server/scripts/migrate-dev-db.tsandt3-sqlite-state.tsopen a database on their own but never run the J5 lane. Every file-backed open is covered. The:memory:layer is not: it has no file to copy.Startup timeouts. On a
VACUUM INTOcopy of a real 1.47 GB database, the snapshot took 2.4 s (warm cache, SSD).DesktopBackendManager)scripts/j5/dogfood-update.shType=simple)Nothing was changed outside the J5 file for this.
Not covered by a test:
Sqlite.ts. The default guarded list (030) has no migration to trigger it until the fold PR, whose fixtures include the snapshot. The tests here call the J5 function directly.Upstream impact
