fix(MessageList)!: keep the reader's place on older pages and count only arrived messages as new - #3342
Conversation
stream-chat renames the paginator API this package reads; follow it: - aggregateState.lastMessage and headmostItem -> latestMessage - headItems -> anchoredHeadItems (or items) - next/prev -> toTail/toHead - hasNext/hasPrev -> hasMoreTail/hasMoreHead useMarkRead compares against latestMessage, so a system message that does not count as the channel's latest (skip_last_msg_update_for_system_msgs) no longer marks the channel unread. BREAKING CHANGE: useChannelPaginatorState returns hasMoreHead/hasMoreTail instead of hasPrev/hasNext, and InfiniteScrollWithComponents reads paginator.hasMoreHead/hasMoreTail. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ages that arrived Both lists also showed NewMessageNotification whenever newer messages existed than the loaded window, e.g. after jumping to an old message, although nothing had arrived. showNotification is now true only when a message from someone else arrives while the reader is scrolled up; reading an older window is signalled by ScrollToLatestMessageButton alone. useNewMessageNotification counts only arrivals at the latest messages, so a jump or a window swap no longer raises it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A debug dialog (actions menu > Pagination Scenarios) that runs message-pagination scenarios step by step on a local test channel answered by a fake server: seed, go offline, messages missed, slow or held reloads, live arrivals, deletes, jumps. Each step checks the rule against the message paginator's real state and shows its windows (tail/head, what can load). Includes the stream-chat-react-native team's scenarios that run with one faked channel, grouped by topic. The draggable dialog re-clamps to the viewport once its shell mounts, and the workspace URL sync leaves the local test channel out of the URL. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
In a channel the button counted message.new events itself, so messages a reconnect reload brought in were never counted: after 110 missed offline and 3 live messages it showed 3 while the "New Messages!" pill showed 113. It now reads the current user's unread count from the channel's read state, which every unread source updates (live messages, query responses, mark read/unread). In a thread it keeps counting new replies to the parent, now starting at 0 instead of the channel's count. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… the bottom after a gap - Loading older messages keeps the message the reader was looking at in place, also when loading starts at the very top; the list no longer jumps to the top of the newly loaded page (and from there loads yet another page). - InfiniteScrollPaginator checks the distance to the edges while scrolling (throttled, and at once on entering the threshold band) instead of only after scrolling stops, so loading starts before the reader reaches the top. loadNextDebounceMs now rate-limits that check. - When the shown messages are swapped for a window ending at the newest message (a reconnect across a gap), the list scrolls to the bottom instead of resting at the top; a jump is still positioned by its focus signal. BREAKING CHANGE: useMessageListScrollManager no longer takes onScrollToTop, and loadNextDebounceMs rate-limits the scroll check instead of waiting for scrolling to stop. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…S15's reload check
- New scenario "Reconnect when the reload shares only your own messages": the newest messages are
yours, fewer than a page arrive offline, and the reconnect must keep older history and the
reader in place. The fake server can seed messages from the current user (seed(count, { yours })).
- RN S15's reload check accepts older messages the list loads by itself near the top of the short
newest page, as long as nothing is missing in between (readsAtLeast).

… list in the scenarios dialog - Kept-interval cases after a reconnect gap: a jump within the head interval (replaced and shown), a jump to a separate interval (kept, newest page stored), your own send and a live message while on the kept interval, unsent messages while on it, three intervals, and an offline delete in the kept interval. Their setups check that the intervals stay apart until the reconnect. - Queued sends: more than a page queued offline while more than a page arrives, through the restored watch and through the reload. - On screen: the scroll-to-latest number and the "New Messages!" pill after a gap, the list resting at the bottom after a gap, and loading older messages starting before the top and keeping the place the reader had while the page loaded (loading indicator shown). - Seed steps say what is seeded on the server and that the channel opens at its newest page, and check it. - Relaxed range checks where the list loads older messages by itself; unique React keys for repeated steps and checks. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…threads and polls
- Typing: the text composer no longer copies who is typing; TypingIndicator, TypingIndicatorHeader,
ChannelHeader and ThreadHeader read it from channel.state, filtered by thread. Typing inside a
thread now shows in the thread header and indicator.
- channel.addMembers / removeMembers take { members }.
- client.moderation.flagMessage takes { message_id }.
- client.getThreadAndHydrate takes ({ message_id }, { watch }).
- pollComposer.updateFields takes { data, injectedFieldErrors? }.
No exported API changes; the migration guide and the breaking-changes audit note the calls that
replacements of the default components make.

131-150: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winKeep the throttle stable across callback changes.
The built-in consumers pass stable paginator methods or memoized loaders, so this does not affect their ordinary renders. However,
InfiniteScrollPaginatoris public and allows inline callbacks. When such a callback changes, the current dependency list creates a new throttle. The cleanup then cancels the pending trailing check, so the final scroll position is not checked. The throttle interval also starts again. The new
scrollListeneridentity recreates theResizeObserver.Create the throttle from
loadNextDebounceMsonly. Read the latest callbacks and threshold from a ref. Update the cleanup test to expect the replacement loader to receive the pending trailing check.♻️ Suggested fix

## [15.0.0-rc.3](v15.0.0-rc.2...v15.0.0-rc.3) (2026-10-28) ### ⚠ BREAKING CHANGES * channel.watch() resolves with the channel instance to use (the channel, or the instance that superseded it), not the server response: read channel.data, channel.state and channel.messagePaginator instead. - channel.watch() sends no query for a channel already watched and loaded unless it asks for options the current watch was not sent with, so it no longer refreshes one: refresh with channel.reload(), load other messages through channel.messagePaginator. - A channel.watch() while another with the same options is in flight joins it instead of sending a request. * **MessageList:** useMessageListScrollManager no longer takes onScrollToTop. Loading older messages keeps the message the reader was looking at in place, also when loading starts at the very top, instead of pinning the newly loaded page to the top. - InfiniteScrollPaginator's loadNextDebounceMs now rate-limits the edge check while scrolling (the first check runs at once, then at most once per loadNextDebounceMs) instead of waiting until scrolling stops for that long. Older and newer pages start loading before the reader reaches the edge. - MessageList and VirtualizedMessageList pass showNotification to NewMessageNotification only when a message from someone else arrives while the list is scrolled up. Being on an older message set no longer shows it; ScrollToLatestMessageButton signals that. - In a channel, ScrollToLatestMessageButton shows the current user's unread count from the channel's read state instead of counting message.new events, so messages a reconnect brought in are included. In a thread it counts new replies from 0. * marker: the removals are v14 API, so the branch has a `fix!:` commit with a `BREAKING CHANGE:` footer, per the AGENTS.md convention. The footer to keep in the squash commit: * `MessageList` no longer accepts `messages`, `hasMore`, `jumpToLatestMessage`, `loadingMoreNewer` or `messageLimit`, and `VirtualizedMessageList` no longer accepts `messages`; the lists render and paginate the message paginator. `CustomClasses.chatContainer` and the `ComponentContext.LoadingErrorIndicator` slot are removed. Inside `ChatView` the channel list no longer renders its own `str-chat <theme>` scope. See ai-docs/v15-breaking-changes.md (BC-019, BC-046, BC-047, BC-073, BC-074). Verification: `yarn lint`, `tsc -p tsconfig.lib.json --noEmit`, `yarn types:scripts`, `yarn validate-translations` and `yarn test` (281 files, 3090 tests) pass. `yarn build`, `validate-cjs`, `validate-esm`, `validate-entry-isolation`, and the tutorial and vite example builds passed before the rebase onto the guides branch, which brought in only docs and the api-surface script. The ai-chatbot example build was not verified: it hung locally in a sandboxed environment. The theme-scope change was not checked visually in a browser. ### UI Changes No intended visual change inside `ChatView`. Outside `ChatView`, the channel list picks up the design tokens again, as in v14. The `MessageList` loading indicator now appears while older messages load. No screenshots: the examples need Stream credentials to run. <!-- This is an auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> ## Summary by CodeRabbit * **New Features** * Gallery items can display message-specific timestamp overrides. * Reply-count buttons honor a message’s custom thread-opening behavior. * Standalone channel lists now inherit the chat theme, and channel-detail actions use workspace navigation. * `useMessagePaginator` and `useIsCooldownActive` are available from the package entry point. * Message timestamps can render with an explicit message outside a message context. * **Bug Fixes** * Message-list loading indicators and pagination behavior now reflect active page loads more accurately. * Workspace navigation warns when navigation actions are used without a provider. * **Breaking Changes** * Removed legacy message-list props and the `LoadingErrorIndicator` component override slot. <!-- end of auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> ### Bug Fixes * correct issues found during the comment cleanup ([#3334](#3334)) ([7f87026](7f87026)) * **examples:** translate the voice visualization keys in the vite example ([#3352](#3352)) ([c88ab33](c88ab33)), closes [#3347](#3347) * **MediaRecorder:** stop the recording timer when the preview unmounts ([#3351](#3351)) ([3c8b30a](3c8b30a)) * **MessageList:** keep the reader's place on older pages and count only arrived messages as new ([#3342](#3342)) ([ab00d67](ab00d67)) * remove dead v15 surface and restore v14 behaviors found by the API audit ([#3328](#3328)) ([d721f40](d721f40)), closes [#3327](#3327) [#3305](#3305) [#3237](#3237) ### Features * **ai-components:** add useHeardText for voice-paced text ([#3348](#3348)) ([ec7c956](ec7c956)), closes [#3343](#3343) [#3344](#3344) [#3344](#3344) [#3343](#3343) [#3339](#3339) [#3347](#3347) * **ai-components:** add VoiceWave and VoiceGlow voice-agent visualizations ([#3347](#3347)) ([216d00d](216d00d)), closes [#3339](#3339) [#3339](#3339) [#3339](#3339) ### Refactors * call Channel.watch(), which replaces ensureWatched() in stream-chat ([#3346](#3346)) ([0100d98](0100d98))

🎉 This PR is included in version 15.0.0-rc.3 🎉 The release is available on: Your semantic-release bot 📦🚀 |
…rame (#3357) Ticket: https://linear.app/stream/issue/REACT-1469 ### Goal Every page load of a v15 app whose channel list grows with its content reports `ResizeObserver loop completed with undelivered notifications`. Under CRA / webpack-dev-server this becomes a full-screen "Uncaught runtime errors" overlay that blocks clicks. It was found while migrating the team-ts and social-messenger-ts demos in website-react-examples to 15.0.0-rc.3 (GetStream/website-react-examples#138), and does not happen on v14. ### Root cause `InfiniteScrollPaginator` observes its root with a ResizeObserver and checks the distance to the edges on every resize. #3342 changed that check from a trailing `debounce` (always async) to a leading `throttle`, so the observer's first callback now calls `loadNextOnScrollToBottom` synchronously. The page load updates a `StateStore`, and the `useSyncExternalStore` subscription renders synchronously in the callback's microtasks. When the root is sized by its content (team-ts's channel lists are), the root grows within the same ResizeObserver delivery. The browser cannot deliver that resize in the same frame and reports the loop error. ### How it was isolated I ran a copy of team-ts against the rc.3 build with `window.ResizeObserver` wrapped from a module imported first. The wrapper recorded every callback's targets per animation frame and which observed elements changed size during the callback and its microtasks. The error appeared on 2 of 2 loads. Only the paginator's callback ever resized an observed element: the channel list root went from 240x111 to 240x132 within its own callback, and the next frame delivered 240x132. The `MessageList` relayout observer, `useFloatingDateSeparatorMessageList` and `useScrollLocationLogic` never resized an observed element. ### Implementation details - The observer callback now schedules the check with `requestAnimationFrame`, at most once per frame, and the frame is cancelled on unmount. The resize the loaded page causes is then observed in the following frame instead of within the current delivery. - Scroll-triggered checks are unchanged and still run immediately. - New tests in `InfiniteScrollPaginator.test.tsx` cover: no check inside the observer callback (the check runs in the next frame), one check for several resizes in a frame, and a pending check dropped when the observer is replaced. Each fails when the code it covers is removed (the deferral, the per-frame guard, the cancel in the cleanup). Verified: with a local build of this branch in the same team-ts copy, there was no loop error on 5 of 5 loads, and no observer callback resized an observed element. `yarn lint`, `tsc -p tsconfig.lib.json --noEmit` and `yarn test` (3,300 tests) pass. Related: REACT-1439 (a content-height `ChannelList` loads every page on mount). This PR does not change that behavior; it only moves the load out of the observer callback. ### UI Changes None visible, apart from the dev-server error overlay no longer appearing. <!-- This is an auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> <!-- coderabbit-ai-generated:v1 --> ## Summary by CodeRabbit * **Bug Fixes** * Improved infinite-scroll behavior when content is resized: edge checks now run on the next frame, and repeated resize events within that frame trigger only one check. * Pending checks are discarded when the observer configuration changes or the component is cleaned up. <!-- end of auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai -->
🎯 Goal
Follow the stream-chat message paginator changes in GetStream/stream-chat-js#1926 (REACT-1075), and fix the message list where those changes exposed wrong behaviour: the reader jumping on older pages, "New Messages!" shown when nothing arrived, and the scroll-to-latest count missing messages a reconnect brought in.
Needs the stream-chat build from GetStream/stream-chat-js#1926.
🛠 Implementation details
Paginator renames (
refactor!)aggregateState.lastMessage/headmostItem→latestMessage;headItems→anchoredHeadItems;next/prev→toTail/toHead;hasNext/hasPrev→hasMoreTail/hasMoreHead.useMarkReadcompares againstlatestMessage, so a system message that does not count as the channel's latest no longer marks the channel unread.Message list
InfiniteScrollPaginatorchecks the distance to the edges while scrolling (throttled, and at once on entering the threshold band) instead of only after scrolling stops, so older messages start loading before the reader reaches the top.ScrollToLatestMessageButtonin a channel shows the current user's unread count from the read state. It used to countmessage.newevents itself and missed what a reconnect reload brought in (3 instead of 113). In a thread it still counts new replies.Newer stream-chat API
