fix(specs): write spec files one at a time - #2037
Conversation
The specs instruction asked for one spec file per capability but not when to write them, so with many capabilities the agent planned every file before writing the first. The user saw only a spinner, and an interrupt threw the whole plan away. Ask the agent to start from the first capability that has no spec file, announce each capability in one line, and write its file as soon as it is drafted. A glob artifact reads `done` once one matching file exists, so after an interrupted run `/opsx:continue` would move on to `design` and leave the missing specs unwritten. Have it check `done` glob artifacts for missing files first and write those before anything else. Refs Fission-AI#2034

The partial-artifact check in /opsx:continue compared the existing files with what the artifact's instruction asks for, but fetched that instruction only after finding a gap. Status JSON doesn't carry the instruction, so the agent had nothing to compare against. Get the instruction and read the dependencies first, and for spec-driven's specs name the proposal as the source of the expected files.

Expected spec paths are relative to the change, but `existingOutputPaths` holds absolute paths, so comparing them directly could report an existing spec as missing and send it to be rewritten. Resolve each expected path against `changeRoot` first.

No blocking findings from this pass.
I specifically checked the issue #2034 failure path against the artifact graph/status contracts:
specs/**/*.mdstill reads as complete once any matching file exists, so the repair does need to happen before/opsx:continuefollows the planning-complete or next-ready branches.- This PR places the partial-glob check before that branch and tells the agent to load the artifact instructions/dependencies before comparing expected files with
artifactPaths.<id>.existingOutputPaths. - For
spec-drivenspecs, the expected-file source is concrete enough: proposal capabilities map tospecs/<capability-path>/spec.md, resolved fromchangeRoot, and the instruction says to preserve existing files.
Residual risk: this is still an agent-instruction fix rather than a machine-readable expected/missing output contract, so arbitrary custom-schema glob artifacts remain heuristic unless their instructions make the expected files clear. That seems acceptable for this patch since the concrete bug is the default spec-driven specs artifact.
I did not run the full suite in this pass; the isolated checkout had no node_modules. I did run git diff --check origin/main...HEAD, and it was clean.

Approved. The user job is clear: show progress while drafting multi-capability specs and preserve partial work across interruptions. The instruction change is the smallest viable fix, the recovery check runs before continue advances the workflow, existing files are preserved by path identity, the canonical spec-driven docs are updated, and CI is green. The broader custom-glob case remains intentionally heuristic. Because this changes docs-lab, @TabishB still needs to give the required final docs review before merge.
Closes #2034
What this changes
When a proposal declares many capabilities, the agent creating
specscan go silent for a long time, apparently drafting every spec file before it writes any. Until the first file appears the user sees only a spinner, and an interrupt throws away the whole plan. The
specsinstruction now tells the agent to write the files one at a time. It starts from the first capability in the proposal that has no spec file yet, says in one line which capability it's writing, and writes each file as soon as it's drafted. The docs-lab schema reference quotes the instruction, so it gets the same text. That alone would make a re-run worse.
specsreadsdoneas soon as one matching file exists, so after an interrupted run/opsx:continuemoved on todesignand the missing specs were never written.openspec validatedoesn't compare spec files with the proposal either, so nothing caught it. The continue skill and command now begin step 3 with a check: for eachdoneartifact with a glob output, compareartifactPaths.<id>.existingOutputPathswith the files its instruction asks for. If some are missing, write those and stop; that counts as the run's one artifact. The check comes before the planning-complete branch, so it also catches a change wheredesignandtaskswere written after the interrupted run.How you verified it

/opsx:ffand/opsx:proposefollow the samespecsinstruction, so they also write spec files one at a time. They don't need the check, because only/opsx:continuepicks up a change halfway through planning. If one of the others is interrupted, telling the agent to carry on in the same conversation is enough: it knows which files it has already written.pnpm changesetif this affects users, and committed the fileSummary by CodeRabbit
/opsx:continuefinds a completed artifact with required output files missing, it creates only the missing files and stops. If it’s unclear whether a file was intentionally omitted, it asks before proceeding. This check also applies to other completed artifacts that produce multiple files.
