Explanation of Change

The emoji picker bounced up/down on Android (3-button navigation mode) when the search keyboard opened and closed. This was a regression from #88578, which added a keyboard-conditional bottom safe-area padding to the picker's inner View:

const {isKeyboardShown} = useKeyboardState();
const bottomSafeAreaPaddingStyle = useBottomSafeSafeAreaPaddingStyle({addBottomSafeAreaPadding: !isKeyboardShown});

isKeyboardShown is derived from keyboardHeight !== 0, which is only set by the keyboardDidShow/keyboardDidHide listeners — i.e. it flips after the keyboard animation finishes. Meanwhile the modal slides smoothly with the keyboard via avoidKeyboard (KeyboardAvoidingView). So the padding was added/removed in one discrete step a beat after the smooth modal motion, abruptly changing the picker's content height → the visible "jump then settle" in both directions.

This PR keys the inner padding on isKeyboardActive instead. isKeyboardActive toggles on keyboardWillShow/keyboardWillHide (animation start), the same signal the modal layer itself uses for its safe-area handling (BaseModal.tsx). The padding now changes in sync with the keyboard-avoidance animation, eliminating the out-of-sync height change that caused the bounce while preserving the original intent (no gap above the keyboard when it is shown).

Tests

// TODO: The human co-author must fill out the tests you ran before marking this PR as "ready for review"
// Please describe what tests you performed that validated your changes worked.

  1. On an Android device with 3-button navigation enabled (not gestures), open any chat.
  2. Open the emoji picker.
  3. Tap the search field to open the keyboard.
  4. Tap the back button to dismiss the keyboard.
  5. Verify the emoji picker does not bounce upward when the keyboard opens, nor downward when it closes.
  6. Verify there is no unwanted gap between the emoji picker content and the keyboard while the keyboard is open.
  • Verify that no errors appear in the JS console

PR Author Checklist

  • I linked the correct issue in the ### Fixed Issues section above
  • I wrote clear testing steps that cover the changes made in this PR
    • I added steps for local testing in the Tests section
    • I added steps for the expected offline behavior in the Offline steps section
    • I added steps for Staging and/or Production testing in the QA steps section
    • I added steps to cover failure scenarios (i.e. verify an input displays the correct error message if the entered data is not correct)
    • I turned off my network connection and tested it while offline to ensure it matches the expected behavior (i.e. verify the default avatar icon is displayed if app is offline)
    • I tested this PR with a High Traffic account against the staging or production API to ensure there are no regressions (e.g. long loading states that impact usability).
  • I included screenshots or videos for tests on all platforms
  • I ran the tests on all platforms & verified they passed on:
    • Android: Native
    • Android: mWeb Chrome
    • iOS: Native
    • iOS: mWeb Safari
    • MacOS: Chrome / Safari
  • I verified there are no console errors (if there's a console error not related to the PR, report it or open an issue for it to be fixed)
  • I verified there are no new alerts related to the canBeMissing param for useOnyx
  • I followed proper code patterns (see Reviewing the code)
    • I verified that any callback methods that were added or modified are named for what the method does and never what callback they handle (i.e. toggleReport and not onIconClick)
    • I verified that comments were added to code that is not self explanatory
    • I verified that any new or modified comments were clear, correct English, and explained "why" the code was doing something instead of only explaining "what" the code was doing.
    • I verified any copy / text shown in the product is localized by adding it to src/languages/* files and using the translation method
      • If any non-english text was added/modified, I used JaimeGPT to get English > Spanish translation. I then posted it in #expensify-open-source and it was approved by an internal Expensify engineer. Link to Slack message:
    • I verified all numbers, amounts, dates and phone numbers shown in the product are using the localization methods
    • I verified any copy / text that was added to the app is grammatically correct in English. It adheres to proper capitalization guidelines (note: only the first word of header/labels should be capitalized), and is either coming verbatim from figma or has been approved by marketing (in order to get marketing approval, ask the Bug Zero team member to add the Waiting for copy label to the issue)
    • I verified proper file naming conventions were followed for any new files or renamed files. All non-platform specific files are named after what they export and are not named "index.js". All platform-specific files are named for the platform the code supports as outlined in the README.
    • I verified the JSDocs style guidelines (in STYLE.md) were followed
  • If a new code pattern is added I verified it was agreed to be used by multiple Expensify engineers
  • I followed the guidelines as stated in the Review Guidelines
  • I tested other components that can be impacted by my changes (i.e. if the PR modifies a shared library or component like Avatar, I verified the components using Avatar are working as expected)
  • I verified all code is DRY (the PR doesn't include any logic written more than once, with the exception of tests)
  • I verified any variables that can be defined as constants (ie. in CONST.ts or at the top of the file that uses the constant) are defined as such
  • I verified that if a function's arguments changed that all usages have also been updated correctly
  • If any new file was added I verified that:
    • The file has a description of what it does and/or why is needed at the top of the file if the code is not self explanatory
  • If a new CSS style is added I verified that:
    • A similar style doesn't already exist
    • The style can't be created with an existing StyleUtils function (i.e. StyleUtils.getBackgroundAndBorderStyle(theme.componentBG))
  • If new assets were added or existing ones were modified, I verified that:
    • The assets are optimized and compressed (for SVG files, run npm run compress-svg)
    • The assets load correctly across all supported platforms.
  • If the PR modifies code that runs when editing or sending messages, I tested and verified there is no unexpected behavior for all supported markdown - URLs, single line code, code blocks, quotes, headings, bold, strikethrough, and italic.
  • If the PR modifies a generic component, I tested and verified that those changes do not break usages of that component in the rest of the App (i.e. if a shared library or component like Avatar is modified, I verified that Avatar is working as expected in all cases)
  • If the PR modifies a component related to any of the existing Storybook stories, I tested and verified all stories for that component are still working as expected.
  • If the PR modifies a component or page that can be accessed by a direct deeplink, I verified that the code functions as expected when the deeplink is used - from a logged in and logged out account.
  • If the PR modifies the UI (e.g. new buttons, new UI components, changing the padding/spacing/sizing, moving components, etc) or modifies the form input styles:
    • I verified that all the inputs inside a form are aligned with each other.
    • I added Design label and/or tagged @Expensify/design so the design team can review the changes.
  • If a new page is added, I verified it's using the ScrollView component to make it scrollable when more elements are added to the page.
  • I added unit tests for any new feature or bug fix in this PR to help automatically prevent regressions in this user flow.
  • If the main branch was merged into this PR after a review, I tested again and verified the outcome was still expected according to the Test steps.

I created this PR from an upstream branch since I don't have push access to your fork.

To take ownership of this branch and be able to push updates, run:

git remote add upstream https://github.com/Expensify/App.git
git fetch upstream claude-fixEmojiPickerKeyboardBounce
git checkout -b claude-fixEmojiPickerKeyboardBounce upstream/claude-fixEmojiPickerKeyboardBounce
git push -u origin claude-fixEmojiPickerKeyboardBounce

Then you can close this PR and open a new one from your fork.

Checks I ran locally (all passing): lint-changed, typecheck (tsgo), Prettier, and EmojiPickerMenuTest. The React Compiler check reports only 3 pre-existing Cannot access refs during render errors at line 39 that are identical on main (the file was already grandfathered) — this change introduces no new compiler errors.

⚠️ This is a deploy blocker fix and is best verified on a physical Android device in 3-button navigation mode, which I can't fully exercise here. Please confirm the bounce is gone on-device and that no gap appears above the keyboard before marking ready for review.

🤖 I analyzed the failing checks — there's no code fix needed.

The only failing check is PR Author Checklist / checklist, which fails because the checklist boxes in the PR description are still unchecked (0 out of 41 completed). That's a manual step for the human co-author, not a code or CI issue, so there's nothing for me to push.

Every substantive check has passed: typecheck, all 8 test jobs, ESLint, Prettier, Bun tests, knip, Storybook tests, React Compiler Compliance, the build jobs, spellcheck, and the unused-styles check. (The baseline-perf-tests / branch-perf-tests jobs are still running but they're informational comparisons, not gating failures.)

To get the checklist green: the human co-author should fill in the Tests/QA sections and tick the author checklist items, then mark the PR "Ready for review."

P2 Badge Preserve padding for zero-height keyboard events

This now removes the emoji picker's bottom safe-area padding whenever isKeyboardActive is true, but withKeyboardState sets that flag on every keyboardWillShow/keyboardDidShow without checking whether a soft keyboard actually has a positive height. In zero-height keyboard cases such as hardware keyboards, nothing covers the bottom inset, and because this modal opts into edge-to-edge bottom safe-area handling, this inner padding is the only protection against the home/navigation indicator; the bottom row can end up underneath it while the search input is focused. Please gate this on a positive keyboard height as well as activity.

🤖 truph01 asked me to check this. The concern is valid as a code-level regression, though its real-world trigger is uncertain.

Why it's valid: the two flags come from different sources in withKeyboardState.tsx:

  • isKeyboardActive is an event-driven toggle — set true on keyboardWillShow/keyboardDidShow with no height check (L44-L51).
  • isKeyboardShown is derived as keyboardHeight !== 0 (L91).

So when a show event fires with zero (or, on Android, sub-inset) height, isKeyboardActive is true while isKeyboardShown is false. Since the picker opts into edge-to-edge mode (EmojiPicker.tsx:277) and the modal therefore adds no bottom padding itself (BaseModal.tsx:265), the inner padding at EmojiPicker.tsx:247 is the only protection for the home/nav indicator — and it would be dropped in that case.

The caveat: whether a hardware keyboard actually emits a show event with height: 0 is platform/react-native-keyboard-controller runtime behavior I can't confirm from code alone. On iOS, a hardware keyboard often suppresses the soft keyboard entirely (no show event → both flags false → no bug). So this is a real edge-case gap, but its actual frequency is unverified — best confirmed on a device with a hardware keyboard attached.

Minimal fix that keeps the animation-sync benefit: gate on positive height too, using keyboardActiveHeight (already set alongside isKeyboardActive on willShow — L52, exposed at L93):

const {isKeyboardActive, keyboardActiveHeight} = useKeyboardState();
const bottomSafeAreaPaddingStyle = useBottomSafeSafeAreaPaddingStyle({
    addBottomSafeAreaPadding: !(isKeyboardActive && keyboardActiveHeight > 0),
});

This preserves syncing the padding change with the keyboard animation (the bounce fix) while restoring the positive-height guard the old isKeyboardShown provided.

If you'd like, reply @MelvinBot implement this and I'll push the change — I'm an assignee so I can commit to this branch.

@MelvinBot Yes, let's update to:

    const isSoftKeyboardActive = isKeyboardActive && keyboardHeight > 0;
    const bottomSafeAreaPaddingStyle = useBottomSafeSafeAreaPaddingStyle({addBottomSafeAreaPadding: !isSoftKeyboardActive});

🤖 Done — pushed in 7582962.

The padding now keys on isSoftKeyboardActive instead of isKeyboardActive alone:

const { isKeyboardActive, keyboardHeight } = useKeyboardState();
const isSoftKeyboardActive = isKeyboardActive && keyboardHeight > 0;
const bottomSafeAreaPaddingStyle = useBottomSafeSafeAreaPaddingStyle({
  addBottomSafeAreaPadding: !isSoftKeyboardActive,
});

See EmojiPicker.tsx:246-249.

Checks: Prettier, lint-changed, and typecheck-tsgo all pass. The React Compiler check reports 3 pre-existing Cannot access refs during render errors at line 39 — these are present on main too, so this change introduces no regression.

Note: shubham1206agra mentioned other components rely on the same logic — worth a quick scan to confirm none of them need the matching keyboardHeight > 0 guard.

@MelvinBot Let's revert the code change to something like:

   const {isKeyboardActive} = useKeyboardState();
    const bottomSafeAreaPaddingStyle = useBottomSafeSafeAreaPaddingStyle({addBottomSafeAreaPadding: !isKeyboardActive});

since other component also relies on same logic.

Done — reverted to the simpler form so it matches the logic other components use:

const {isKeyboardActive} = useKeyboardState();
const bottomSafeAreaPaddingStyle = useBottomSafeSafeAreaPaddingStyle({addBottomSafeAreaPadding: !isKeyboardActive});

Dropped the extra keyboardHeight > 0 guard (and the isSoftKeyboardActive derived value) and trimmed the now-stale part of the comment. Pushed as a6c0d10.

Verification
  • ./scripts/lint.sh src/components/EmojiPicker/EmojiPicker.tsx → ✅ pass
  • npm run typecheck-tsgo → ✅ pass
  • React Compiler compliance: the 3 pre-existing Cannot access refs during render errors are unchanged by this edit (verified against the file before the change), so no new regression.

🤖 No help site changes required.

This PR is a pure visual/animation fix. The only change is in src/components/EmojiPicker/EmojiPicker.tsx: the emoji picker's bottom safe-area padding is now keyed on isKeyboardActive (toggles on keyboardWillShow/keyboardWillHide) instead of isKeyboardShown, so the padding changes in sync with the keyboard-avoidance animation and no longer bounces on Android.

There is no change to any user-facing feature, setting, tab, label, button, or documented workflow — only the smoothness of an existing interaction. Nothing under App/docs/articles describes this animation behavior, so no documentation update is warranted and I did not open a docs PR.

If you believe a help article should be touched anyway, let me know which one and I'll draft it.

🤖 No help site changes required.

This PR is a purely internal bug fix for an Android UI animation-timing regression in the emoji picker. It swaps the keyboard signal that drives the picker's bottom safe-area padding (isKeyboardShown → isKeyboardActive) so the padding changes in sync with the modal's keyboard-avoidance animation, eliminating the visible "bounce" when the search keyboard opens/closes.

There is no change to any user-facing feature, flow, setting, label, or behavior that is documented on the help site (App/docs/articles). The emoji picker behaves identically from the user's perspective — only the animation jitter is removed. Accordingly, no draft docs PR was created.

@truph01, if you believe a help site article does need updating here, let me know which behavior changed from a user's perspective and I'll draft the changes.
