Action Performed:

1. Go to staging.new.expensify.com
2. Go to self DM.
3. Create an expense.
4. Go to workspace chat.
5. Create an expense.
6. Open expense report in workspace chat.
7. Click More > Merge.
8. Select self DM expense > Continue.
9. Select all the details from self DM expense (second option in each section) > Next.
10. Click Merge expenses.

Expected Result:

After merging with self DM expense, app will open the destination report.

Actual Result:

After merging with self DM expense, app returns to workspace chat instead of destination report.

If we merge self DM expense with workspace expense and select workspace report, app will open workspace report as expected.

What is the root cause of that problem?

When the target reportID is CONST.REPORT.UNREPORTED_REPORT_ID, the reportIDToDismiss will be undefined, therefore we will only dismiss the current modal.

After the transaction is merged, the current report will be removed and navigation will occur to the parent workspace chat.

If the target reportID is CONST.REPORT.UNREPORTED_REPORT_ID, then reportIDToDismiss should be assigned the transactionThreadReportID of the transaction.

What is the root cause of that problem?

After a merge is completed, the confirmation flow dismisses the modal without always resolving a valid destination report. When the merge context is unreported (such as for self DM expenses), no fallback report ID is provided, so navigation falls back to the underlying screen instead of opening the correct destination report.

What changes do you think we should make in order to solve the problem?

Before dismissing the merge confirmation modal, we should explicitly resolve a valid destination report ID based on the merge context.

Specifically:

• If the merge transaction’s report ID is unreported, we should fall back to the user’s self DM report.
• Otherwise, we should use the merge transaction’s report ID directly.

This resolved report ID should then be used when dismissing the modal so that the app always navigates to a valid destination report after a merge, rather than returning to the underlying screen.
