Proposal:
Clean up README mobile setup instructions
Background:
The current README guides developers toward building the app locally, which is time-consuming and requires complex setup. With the availability of remote builds, developers can now build and run the app much faster—up to 10× quicker and with minimal configuration. Updating the README to emphasise that this more efficient flow will save time and reduce setup friction for new contributors.
Problem:
When new developers follow the README’s current instructions, if they attempt outdated manual steps, then they waste time and remain uncertain whether their environment is correctly configured.
Solution:
Splitting the “Running Mobile Application” section into two parts: one for apps built using remote build, and one for cases where a local build fallback is needed.
Added a section on obtaining a GITHUB_TOKEN for Rock.
Added a step for running Metro server to clarify that it’s still needed in the daily workflow.
Adding a troubleshooting section clarifying that failed workflows may prevent Rock from fetching cached builds.
Removing the section about manually running pod install scripts and bundle install.
These changes will reduce confusion during initial setup and improve the developer onboarding experience.
