Avoid simctl process latency for Home button - #180
launch SpringBoard through the already-loaded SimDevice CoreSimulator API for Home-button presses
retain the existing xcrun simctl launch path as a fallback when that selector is unavailable or fails
Why
The current Home path starts a separate asynchronous xcrun simctl process. In repeated simulator tests, that process was the dominant delay: the framebuffer and encoded stream stayed unchanged until the simctl launch request reached SpringBoard. It could also serialize other simctl display operations behind the launch.
Calling the equivalent SimDevice API directly removes the extra process and avoids that queueing behavior while preserving the same SpringBoard relaunch semantics needed on Xcode 26+.
Validation
On an iPhone 17 simulator with Xcode 27.1, using the same locally built binary for both paths over 20 Home transitions:
path
client-visible p50
client-visible p95
p95 after first cold transition
direct SimDevice launch
312 ms
1,342 ms
843 ms
xcrun simctl launch
668 ms
1,123 ms
1,114 ms
The direct path cuts the typical transition roughly in half. I also ran five transitions with the subprocess fallback temporarily disabled; all five reached Home, confirming the direct selector works on this runtime.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved SpringBoard launch reliability by trying the simulator’s native launch method first, with a command-line fallback when it’s unavailable or unsuccessful.
launchSpringBoard(deviceUDID:) now attempts to launch SpringBoard through the CoreSimulator API when available. If the API is unavailable or the launch fails, the method falls back to xcrun simctl launch.
Changes: SpringBoard Launch
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Direct launch and fallback packages/serve-sim/Sources/SimNative/HIDInjector.swift
The method tries the CoreSimulator launch API when available. If it is unavailable or reports failure, the method uses the existing simctl fallback and logs the error when provided.
Pressing Home can now stall later touch, button, and display actions on the same simulator while SpringBoard launches. Moving the blocking call off the HID actor before merging would avoid this latency regression.

Explanation
The title "Avoid simctl process latency for Home button" matches the main change. The PR makes the Home-button path launch SpringBoard through the SimDevice CoreSimulator API, so it skips a separate simctl process. The raw summary confirms that HIDInjector.launchSpringBoard now tries launchApplicationWithID:options:pid:error: first and falls back to xcrun simctl launch. The title is specific, concise, and free of file lists or vague terms. It names the reason (latency) and the scope (Home button), which fits the stated objectives.

Thanks for digging into this, @ishaanbahl. Cutting the simctl process out of the Home path is the right direction, and the measurements in the description are really useful. A few things need to change before this can land:
1. This blocks the HID actor for the whole launch (blocking). HIDInjector runs on its own serial hid-injector queue (unownedExecutor), and every touch, key, crown and button event goes through that executor. The old path was fire-and-forget: process.run() returns right away. launchApplicationWithID:options:pid:error: is synchronous, so a Home press now holds the actor for the whole SpringBoard launch, which is 312 ms at p50 and 1.3 s at p95 by your own numbers. Any taps or keys sent right after Home will queue behind it. Please keep the launch off the actor's executor, either with CoreSimulator's async variant (launchApplicationAsyncWithID:options:completionQueue:completionHandler:, which FBSimulatorControl uses; please confirm it exists across the Xcode range we support) or by dispatching the sync call to a separate queue, and run the simctl fallback from the completion when it fails.
2. Please explain the p95.
The direct path's p95 (1,342 ms) is worse than simctl (1,123 ms). The "after first cold transition" column suggests the first call is the outlier. Is that a one-time CoreSimulator warm-up, or is it the actor blocking from point 1? A sentence on this (or a re-measure after fixing point 1) would help us trust the win.
3. Resolve the selector once, in setup(), like everything else in this file.
Every other private entry point here (IndigoHIDMessageFor*, SimDeviceLegacyHIDClient init) is resolved once in setup(deviceUDID:duoHelper:) and stored as a typed function pointer. This PR builds the selector, typealias, responds(to:) check and unsafeBitCast again on every Home press, inside a function that used to be a simple three-liner. Please resolve the launcher once (a stored optional closure or IMP is enough) so launchSpringBoard is just "direct launch if available, otherwise simctl". Also, failure diagnostics in this file go through print, not fputs(stderr), so please match that.
4. Verification.
The SpringBoard relaunch exists because Xcode 26 drops the Indigo Home press. You validated on Xcode 27.1. Please confirm the direct path also reaches Home on an Xcode 26 runtime, and that pressing Home and then tapping right away lands the tap on the home screen (this is the case point 1 affects). CI hasn't run on this fork PR yet, so we'll need green Mac CI too.
This is a non-UI change, so no screenshots are needed. File size is fine (about 724 lines).

Move the direct SpringBoard launch off HIDInjector’s serial executor.
When simDevice exposes the selector, sendButton invokes launchApplicationWithID:options:pid:error: synchronously on HIDInjector. A slow launch can queue later touch, button, and display operations. The previous xcrun simctl path only called process.run() and did not wait for the process, so this is a regression in blocking behavior. Preserve the fallback ordering while moving the blocking call off the actor or using a non-blocking CoreSimulator API.
