Closes #882

Summary

  • add a Rust-owned exact-path durable and portable-v2 qualification probe
  • add a dry-run-first disposable Fly Machine controller with private networking and fail-closed cleanup
  • add a closed sanitized evidence contract, validator, container, runbook, and mutation safety tests
  • keep 128 GiB as the M5 ceiling; default this probe to a small Machine and reserve scale sizing for measured RSS plateau evidence

Validation

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check
  • cargo test -p graphforge-api --bin graphforge-fly-filesystem-smoke (3 passed)
  • cargo clippy -p graphforge-api --bin graphforge-fly-filesystem-smoke -- -D warnings
  • python3 scripts/ci/cargo-bazel-drift-check.py
  • uv run --frozen --extra dev pytest -q scripts/ci/test-fly-filesystem-qualification.py (11 passed)
  • uv run --frozen --extra dev python scripts/ci/test-fly-filesystem-safety-contract.py
  • dry-run plan at exact head (2 performance CPUs, 4 GiB, 10 GiB volume, zero public services)

No Fly resources were provisioned by this PR.

Walkthrough

Adds a disposable Fly filesystem qualification workflow. It provisions a private Machine, runs persistence and Portable V2 checks, emits sanitized evidence, validates results, guarantees cleanup, and tests safety contracts.

Tests controller behavior, evidence handling, teardown, schema closure, and rejection of unsafe mutations.
Containerized execution

Builds the runtime image and runs the smoke test with timeout handling and acknowledgment polling.

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~90 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f51a2

The PR adds disposable filesystem qualification and evidence generation, but unresolved edge cases can produce misleading measurements, expose host-path details, or leave resources and volumes in unusable states after failures. The change is not merge-ready until these bounded correctness and cleanup issues are fixed or explicitly accepted.

Pin the base images by digest.

rust:1.90-bookworm and debian:bookworm-slim are mutable tags. The same commit therefore produces a different image over time. The controller in scripts/fly-filesystem-qualification.py requires an immutable @sha256 digest reference for the deployed image and rejects anything else. Reproducibility of the qualification evidence depends on the build being reproducible as well.

Add a root .dockerignore.

The set +e and set -e pair is inverted.

Line 2 enables only set -u. The script never enables errexit. set +e at Line 9 is therefore a no-op. set -e at Line 14 enables errexit for the first time, and it applies only to the wait loop and the final exit.

Lines 4 to 7 run without errexit. If rm -f fails, the script continues and the smoke binary may then observe stale state.

State the intent explicitly. Enable set -eu at the top, then disable errexit only around the timeout invocation whose non-zero status the script captures.

Verify at runtime that /work is the mounted Volume.

The whole purpose of the probe is to qualify the Fly Volume filesystem. assert_machine_config in scripts/fly-filesystem-qualification.py verifies the Machine specification declares one mount at /work. It does not prove the runtime mount succeeded. If /work resolves to the container root filesystem, the probe qualifies the wrong filesystem and the evidence is misleading.

Add a mount check before the run and fail closed.

♻️ Proposed addition

 ack=/work/controller-ack
+if ! mountpoint -q /work; then
+ echo "work root /work is not a mount point" >&2

mountpoint is in util-linux, not coreutils. If you adopt this check, add util-linux to the apt-get install line in containers/fly-filesystem-qualification/Dockerfile. A dependency-free alternative compares the device numbers of /work and / with stat -c %d.

Document the relationship between the three timeout budgets.

Three budgets interact and none references the others:

  • --timeout-s 900 is the smoke binary internal budget.
  • 930s with --kill-after=30s is the wrapper backstop, so the container can live up to 960 seconds before the wait loop starts.
  • remaining=300 extends the machine life to about 1260 seconds.

The controller default --retrieve-timeout-s is 1200 in scripts/fly-filesystem-qualification.py. The controller can therefore give up before the wrapper stops waiting. Cleanup still destroys the Machine, so no resource leaks. The margins are implicit.

Add a comment that states the budget chain and the invariant that the controller retrieval window must exceed the smoke budget plus the kill grace.

Do not report operational failures through parser().error.

parser().error prints the full usage text and exits with code 2. Code 2 is the argparse usage-error code. An evidence-validation failure, a flyctl failure, and a disqualified result are not usage errors. The usage text also hides the cause.

Print the cause to stderr and return a distinct non-zero code.

Pass the resolved digest into launch_args instead of re-parsing the image reference.

validate_inputs already returns the digest, and execute holds it. Line 77 re-runs DIGEST_REF.fullmatch(args.image) and calls .group('digest') on the result without a None check. If any caller invokes launch_args without the prior validation, the call raises AttributeError instead of QualificationError.

Confirm where phase-level peak RSS is recorded.

The success evidence records host.memory_bytes from /proc/meminfo MemTotal. That value is host capacity, not process usage. Issue #882 asks for phase-level peak RSS. This file records no per-phase RSS sample.

If another layer captures peak RSS, ignore this note. If no layer captures it, read VmHWM from /proc/self/status after each phase and add the samples to the evidence.

Do you want me to generate the per-phase VmHWM sampling and the matching schema fields?

Add tests for the input validators.

The tests cover evidence shape, cause sanitization, and atomic write. They do not cover validate_metadata, validate_paths, or parse_config. Those functions enforce the digest, region, and path-containment rules that keep the probe pinned and prevent evidence writes outside the work root.

Add cases for a rejected uppercase digest, a digest of the wrong length, an out-of-range region length, a relative --work-root, an --evidence-out outside the work root, and a missing option value.

As per coding guidelines: "Run validation gates appropriate to the changed surface, including workspace tests and relevant binding tests."
