This release is the first beta for forge package manager and it brings many exciting features also!
Firstly the macos support is officially added.
With it many bugs that are found during testing by me are now fixed.
Till now forge never downloads any dependency of soft trait making much dependency chaos so i have fixed it, now it downloads all dependency of a soft trait.
A critical issue in cli of forge about remove command is now fixed
Next hard traits official apis and android support via termux is coming!
The aim of this beta is that i can get suggestions and bugs so please feel free to open issues.
Also, now for windows build standalone builds are used instead of onefile to prevent windows defender thinking builds as trojan horse.
🛠️ Forge v0.3.0-alpha: Major linux package managers now have ethos!
This release adds -v and --version into forge for version detection.
Also this release adds major package manager support for forge installation.
You can check on Linux Instructions Page for more if your distribution is supported or not and if not the using unversal tar of ethos-lang as it ships both forge and ethos.
If not supported you can download the universal tar and run install.sh by following the install instructions of ethos-lang as universal tar have both ethos-lang and forge shippe.
You can visit https://software.opensuse.org/download.html?project=home:AmanCode22&package=ethos-forge to download the package/add ethos-forge repository to your package manager.
Tar would install ethos and forge both same applies to windows installer.
Next macos support and first beta are coming up....
🛠️ Forge v0.2.0-alpha: The Official Ethos Toolchain
Forge is the dedicated project manager and build tool for the Ethos programming language. This milestone marks the shift to a natively compiled, standalone binary, ensuring a fast and reliable environment for managing your Ethos projects.
📦 Windows Installation (Unified)
To ensure the best user experience, we have bundled the Forge toolchain directly with the main Ethos Compiler in a single, unified installer.
Looking for the Windows Installer? Please head over to the Ethos-lang v0.2.0-alpha Release Page to download the .exe setup wizard. This installer will automatically set up both Ethos and Forge on your system and configure your PATH.
🐧 Linux: Coming Soon
We are hard at work bringing Forge to the Linux ecosystem. Native support for the following platforms will be added very soon:
Fedora/Red Hat: via COPR (RPM)
Ubuntu/Debian: via PPA (DEB)
Arch Linux: via AUR (PKGBUILD)
Universal: Portable .tar.gz
✨ What's New in Forge v0.2.0
Native Compilation: Now built as a standalone binary using Nuitka—no Python runtime required.
Unified Integration: Fully compatible with the Ethos v0.2.0-alpha compiler.
Project Lifecycle: Improved handling of initialization and build workflows for Ethos projects.
Traits Directory: Automatic provisioning of the ~/.ethos/traits structure.
Forge v0.1.0-alpha: The Ethos Package Manager
Welcome to the first public Alpha release of Forge, the official, bespoke package manager for the Ethos ecosystem! 🛠️
Forge handles the complex logistics of managing both high-level Python modules (Soft Traits) and low-level native C/C++ binaries (Hard Traits).
🚀 Key Features in this Alpha:
- Smart PyPI Resolution: Forge automatically queries the PyPI API, detects your OS, and installs the optimal pre-compiled
.whlfile. If no wheel exists, it falls back to downloading and extracting the.tar.gzSource Distribution. - Hard Trait Management: Easily download, extract, and install native zip files containing compiled C/C++ traits and their
manifest.jsondefinitions. - Local & Remote Support: Install traits directly from a remote URL or from a local file path on your hard drive.
- Standardized Terminal UX: Clean, professional terminal feedback utilizing
[*],[+], and[-]prefixes to track installation processes. - Comprehensive Help Menus: Expanded
argparsedocumentation providing copy-pasteable examples for every command.
🐧 Linux Installation (Standalone)
You do not need Python installed to run this! I have compiled Forge into a standalone native binary using Nuitka.
- Download the
forgebinary attached in the assets below. - Open your terminal and make it executable:
chmod +x forge - Run it to see the help menu:
./forge
Note: Windows and macOS native binaries are planned for Phase 2. For now, non-Linux users can run Ethos directly from the Python source code. Also, android(termux) build would be published after project reaches stable release.
