Cite: optional numbered markers linking quotes to source passages
#17520
Cite in composer is useful for giving feedback on specific parts of an assistant response. When quoting several passages, I'd like to see immediately which quote or comment belongs to which source passage, similar to the numbered annotations in Codex.
Could Cite show matching numbered markers, such as [1], [2], and [3]:
beside each quoted passage in the original assistant response;
on its corresponding citation chip in the composer;
on that citation in the sent message?
The matching numbers would make multi-point feedback easier to follow without opening each citation individually.
An optional "Show citation numbers" setting would let users enable this visual aid when useful.
Related: #6965 discusses comments anchored to selected passages. This suggestion focuses specifically on visible, matching numbers for the existing Cite workflow.
