You're likely not missing anything obvious. Google doesn't guarantee showing a favicon, even if all guidelines are followed. In practice, it often depends on "time, crawl frequency, and traffic", and low-traffic sites can take much longer than the docs suggest. This isn't uncommon. Best approach is to keep one |

This answer seems the most accurate I've found online. However, how do I get multiple favicons? Should I only be able to have one per domain (and therefore per GitHub account) or am I doing this incorrectly? |

This usually happens when GitHub flags a login as risky and triggers "email-based verification", even if you don't have 2FA enabled. It's separate from 2FA and unfortunately still blocks access if you can't reach that inbox. At this point, the only real path forward is "GitHub Support". You'll need to open an account recovery ticket and prove ownership (old emails, usernames, repos, billing info, etc.). They're the only ones who can bypass the email check or update the address. A few things to try if you haven't already:
You don't get multiple favicons "at the same time" in Google results. Google will always pick "one favicon per site", and which one it shows is up to Google, not you. On GitHub Pages specifically:

If you define multiple icons (SVG, PNG, ICO), browsers may use them, but "Google Search will still pick just one" and cache it aggressively. So you're not doing it wrong; it's just that Google doesn't support “multiple favicons per site” in search results, and updates can lag quite a bit.
It's frustrating, but this isn't something you can fix locally. Once support verifies you, they can reset the email and unblock the account. |

Hi everyone,
I’m trying to understand an issue I’ve had for a long time with a website hosted on GitHub Pages.
The site has been online for months, is properly indexed in Google Search Console, and has no crawl or indexing errors.
Despite this, Google has never shown the favicon in search results, not even once.
What I’ve already tried (nothing worked)
I followed all official Google guidelines and basically every solution I could find online:
.icofavicon with multiple embedded sizes (16×16, 32×32, 48×48, etc.).svgand.jpg<link rel="icon">tags in the<head>noindex, norobots.txtblockingNone of the above has ever worked.
Current context
I recently did a major redesign of the site and I’m now starting to get a decent and growing number of visitors.
At this point, the missing favicon is becoming a branding issue.
