Summary
Adopt GitHub's new
job.workflow_ref,job.workflow_sha,job.workflow_repository, andjob.workflow_file_pathcontext properties (shipped September 3, 2026) across the org's reusable workflows to enable self-checkout, runtime integrity verification, and elimination of the fragiletooling_refinput pattern that has caused production bugs (#839). Every reusable workflow that currently accepts atooling_refinput can now determine its own source identity at runtime — no caller coordination required.Market Signal
GitHub shipped four new job context properties for reusable workflows in the September 3, 2026 Actions update. These properties let reusable workflows determine their own source identity at runtime —
job.workflow_repositoryandjob.workflow_shafor self-checkout,job.workflow_reffor version identification, andjob.workflow_file_pathfor locating co-located scripts. No competitor CI platform offers equivalent reusable workflow introspection. This is a first-mover opportunity that directly addresses a longstanding architectural pain point in the org's workflow fleet.User Signal
feature-ideation pip step fails — tooling_ref default 'v1' skews from reusable) is exactly the class of bug these properties eliminate — caller-providedtooling_reffalling out of sync with the actual workflow version.tooling_refworkarounds today.Technical Opportunity
Every reusable workflow in
standards/workflows/currently accepts atooling_refinput that callers must keep in sync with the pinned workflow version. Withjob.workflow_repositoryandjob.workflow_sha, each reusable can self-checkout its co-located scripts without caller coordination. The canary rollout engine (scripts/lib/canary-rollout.sh) and compliance audit (scripts/compliance-audit.sh) are the highest-value adoption targets. Additionally,job.workflow_refcould be used in OIDC claim policies to create tighter credential bindings that distinguish calling from defining workflows — strengthening the scoped-secrets posture ahead of GitHub's native scoped-secrets feature.Assessment
tooling_ref-based checkout withjob.workflow_repository@job.workflow_sha. Keeptooling_refas optional override for testing.Adversarial Review
Strongest objection: The
tooling_refinput serves a dual purpose: version pinning AND branch-override for testing. Removing it eliminates the ability to test a reusable workflow against a feature branch's scripts before merging. Callers that rely ontooling_reffor pre-merge testing would lose that capability.Rebuttal: The solution is layered: use
job.workflow_shaas the default (eliminating sync bugs) but keeptooling_refas an optional override input that takes precedence when set. This preserves testability while making the common case (production callers with no override) self-consistent by construction. The canary ring system already provides pre-merge testing via thenextchannel — the override path is for exceptional cases, not the normal flow. Note: these properties are NOT available on GitHub Enterprise Server, but the org uses GitHub.com (cloud), so this is not a constraint.Suggested Next Step
Audit all reusable workflows in
standards/workflows/fortooling_refusage, then update the highest-traffic reusable (e.g.,dev-lead.ymlorcompliance-audit-and-improvement.yml) as a proof-of-concept usingjob.workflow_repository+job.workflow_shafor self-checkout, withtooling_refas optional override. Gate the change through the canary ring system (next → ring0 → ring1 → stable).All reactions
